Discovering Thai Flavors: An Evening Cooking Class Adventure in Chiang Mai

In search of an authentic Thai experience, I joined an evening cooking class in Chiang Mai. From market tours to open-flame cooking, it was a culinary adventure that left me with new skills and unforgettable memories.

A Market Adventure

Arriving in Chiang Mai, I was eager to dive into the local culture and cuisine. The Evening Cooking Class was the perfect opportunity to do just that. The day began with a visit to Somphet Market, a bustling hub of fresh produce and local delicacies. Our guide, Chef Perm, was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly passionate about Thai ingredients. As we wandered through the vibrant stalls, he introduced us to a variety of herbs and spices, each with its own unique aroma and story. It was a sensory overload in the best possible way, and I found myself captivated by the colors and scents that filled the air.

Having traveled through Southeast Asia for a while now, I’ve visited my fair share of markets, but this experience was different. Chef Perm’s insights transformed what could have been a simple shopping trip into an educational journey. I learned to identify ingredients I’d seen countless times but never truly understood. It was a reminder of why I love traveling—there’s always something new to discover, even in familiar places.

From Farm to Table

After our market tour, we headed to the cooking school, nestled in the serene countryside just outside the city. The setting was idyllic, with rows of fresh vegetables and edible flowers waiting to be picked. This hands-on approach was a highlight for me, as it connected us directly to the food we were about to prepare. There’s something incredibly satisfying about harvesting your own ingredients, knowing they’ll soon be transformed into a delicious meal.

The open-air kitchen was a dream come true for any aspiring chef. Each of us had our own cooking station, complete with all the necessary tools to create authentic Thai dishes. Under Chef Perm’s guidance, we embarked on a culinary adventure, crafting everything from spicy curries to sweet mango sticky rice. The papaya salad, in particular, was a revelation—its combination of fresh, tangy, and spicy flavors was unlike anything I’d tasted before.

The Joy of Cooking

One of the most memorable parts of the class was the optional “adventure cooking” over an open flame. It added an element of excitement and challenge to the experience, and I couldn’t resist giving it a try. There’s something primal and exhilarating about cooking over an open fire, and it brought a new dimension to the dishes we prepared.

Throughout the class, Chef Perm’s enthusiasm was infectious. His love for Thai cuisine shone through in every lesson, and his friendly demeanor made the experience all the more enjoyable. By the end of the evening, I felt not only full from the delicious food but also enriched by the knowledge and skills I’d gained.

For anyone traveling through Thailand, this cooking class is a must-do. It’s an excellent value for money, offering a unique blend of culture, education, and culinary delight. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, the Evening Cooking Class is an experience that will leave you with lasting memories and a newfound appreciation for Thai cuisine.
