Wat Rong Khun - White Temple - The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) is distinct from other temples due to its entirely radiant white construction, featuring sparkling reflections from mirrored glass mosaics set in the white plaster. This temple is the brainchild of Mr. Chalermchai Kositpipat, a highly esteemed Thai artist, who envisioned a temple in white to symbolize the purity of Lord Buddha. The artist continues to infuse his religious beliefs and passion for enhancing Buddhism in Thailand into his contemporary art design. The impressive standing Buddha, also white, located at the front, is remarkable. With the White Temple, the Black House, and the Blue Temple, Chiang Rai is truly a city of vibrant temples!
-
Baan Dam Museum - If only booking the Black Museum program, it’s a 207 km drive from central Chiang Mai to Baan Dam (Black House), a unique creation by national artist Thawan Duchanee. Serving as part art studio, part museum, and part home, Baan Dam is an intriguing blend of traditional northern Thai architecture and some striking modern designs. Baan Dam offers a thought-provoking mix of fun, surrealism, and solemnity. While some of the artwork and themes may not appeal to everyone, visiting the Black House is still recommended when in Chiang Rai.
-
Wat Rong Seur Ten (Blue Temple) - The Chiang Rai Blue Temple, or Wat Rong Seua Ten, is situated in Rong Suea Ten in the Rimkok district, a few kilometers from Chiang Rai. This recent temple is still under construction, although its main hall is complete. Its stunning blue interior, featuring a large white Buddha, is particularly striking. The paintings inside are reminiscent of those in the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun). The impressive standing Buddha, also white, at the front, is superb. With the White Temple, the Black House, and the Blue Temple, Chiang Rai is indeed a city of colorful temples!

The Karen Long Neck villages in Chiang Rai are a major tourist attraction in northern Thailand. However, many travelers opt not to visit due to conflicting online information about the ethics of visiting this tribe. Some tourists avoid the Long Neck villages to not support the tribe’s exploitation or because the villages are considered artificial and created for tourism purposes.
