Emeralds are rare gemstones found in only a few places worldwide, such as Zambia, Zimbabwe, Russia, and Brazil. However, Colombia leads globally, producing an impressive 60% of the world’s emeralds.
⛏️ Discover the Mines
Colombia’s emeralds originate from three iconic mining regions: Muzo, Coscuez, and Chivor. Each region produces emeralds with distinct qualities, making them truly unique.
- Plaza de la Aduana - This square features architectural structures from colonial times, including the Marquez de Premio Real house, a typical 18th-century colonial beauty. It’s a fantastic spot for stunning photos.
- Torre del Reloj - This location was the historic entrance to the walled city. Learn about its role in the city’s economic division.
- Catedral Santa Catalina de Alejandria - The Cathedral of Cartagena is a majestic site with unparalleled beauty. Construction began in 1575, but in 1586, the pirate Francis Drake partially destroyed it. Reconstruction resumed between 1598 and 1612, adding features like the high Florentine-style dome and marble on the main facade. A photo here is a must.
- Casa del Marquez de Valdehoyos - Before reaching the Wall via Calle de la Factoria, admire the Casa del Marquez de Valdehoyos, an excellent example of an aristocrat’s residence, showcasing the opulent lifestyle of colonial nobility with splendid rooms, patios, and gardens.
This house was built in the 17th century by the Marquis of Valdehoyos, who had the privilege of importing slaves and flour.
- Parque de Bolívar - Situated in the heart of Cartagena’s historic center, this park is adorned with majestic, surprisingly tall trees. Water fountains provide refreshing relief to urbanists and visitors.
Amidst this lush greenery stands the statue of the liberator Simon Bolivar, mounted on his horse, inaugurated on November 11, 1896. The park offers numerous interesting spots for great photography.
- Santuario de San Pedro Claver - The Jesuits constructed the monastery and church of San Pedro Claver in the 17th century, originally named San Ignacio de Loyola. The church’s facade, like most old city buildings, is made of coral stones, renowned in the region. A photo here is a must when visiting Cartagena.
- Baluarte de San Ignacio - This strategic corner offers a fantastic view of the city, making it an ideal spot for a stunning photo.
The first wall in this section was built on Jesuit land, and the religious order eventually drilled through it to construct their college and cloister, compromising its defensive function. After a thirty-year dispute, it was decided to move the wall outward, creating a street for passage between the school and the future wall, with the Company covering the new construction costs.
