A ‘humbling’experience .. but something you must do .. - What an amazing experience .. and something I would recommend every visitor to Cape Town doing. Having spent four days doing the usual ‘tourist’ things .. open top bus tours, Robben Island, Wine Tasting, V&A etc .. this township visit brings you back to reality ! Our taxi driver was “Chippa” .. a fantastic guy who put smiles on our faces and with who we immediately struck up a rapport due our shared passion for football and in particular Arsenal FC !! As soo as we got in the car, Chippa asked us where we were from a we said “.. a city you probably won’t have heard of .. Norwich” .. and he replied “Ah … The Canaries !” .. and when I asked him what his football team was, he burst into song .. “North London forever ..” the anthem sang at the Emirates stadium for every Arsenal home match ! … After approx 45 min drive .. we arrived in Llanga .. and introduced to our guide Wandeli (I hope I have spelt that correctly). He too is a lovely man who told us about the history of the township and apartheid. From the meeting place, we were taken to the ‘Court House’ and museum where we were told about the ‘Dompas’ .. the mandatory id booklet for black people. From there we did a short (in distance) walking tour, taking our time to appreciate the environment and lifestyles of the people who live in Llanga .. where the unemployment rate is between 35-40% !! Within the township itself, there were around 3 different types of accommodation .. from the ‘informal settlements’ due in the main to lack of housing .. usually shack made out of various materials but usually corrugated iron ..it was quite shocking to think that decent people have to live like this. From there we saw the type of housing that the majority of people live in which could be a shipping container thru to a 3 story brick construction. And finally we saw reasonably ‘nice’ properties that are typically owned by people with ‘professional’ jobs .. teachers, doctors, nurses etc. During the tour, we saw the ‘shoots’ of entrepreneurship.. where people were setting up their own businesses . Like “Cloudy Deliveries” .. very similar to Uber Eats .. but in the township environment .. and the Art Gallery. The struggle and hardship that people experience EVERY day just to ‘survive’. And yet .. virtually everyone we met/saw was pleasant, courteous, engaging, welcoming … and we felt completely safe … quite a contrast to most cities in the UK ! I cannot encourage anyone more so, to please do this tour. Your fees and any money you spend there obviously goes back into the much needed community. Back in the car after 3 hours (ish) touring Llanga.. and talking ‘Arsenal’ with Chippa .. A humbling, thought provoking experience.. but one I am so glad that we did ! 🙏

The tour that gave us the true feeling of visiting South Africa and learning the true culture from reality! - I don't know why they said not to go here but it was very safe and welcoming. A true learning experience about the culture of the people of South Africa. Our guide James deserves more than we could give. The people in the township just need a chance, we seen some great art on display and a new startup company started by two men in the township, it's similar to Uber eats but they use bicycles right now and works just the same for people in the township. They try to make this place bad but it's a real treat for tourist who want to leave with a real feeling of having visited South Africa. Without this trip, I would not be so satisfied with my visit. I can honestly say, I've been there and done that. May GOD bless the area and the people of Langa Township.

One of most fascinating and memorable tours I’ve done - This is one of the most fascinating and memorable tours I’ve done (and I’ve done 25+ Viator tours in my various international travels). Our tour guide who grew up in the Langa Township, Wandile, did an outstanding job providing firsthand details on the history, people, culture, and all other aspects of this township walking tour.
