Excellent - Excellent start to finish. 45 minute boat ride to the island; bus tour of the museum followed by walking tour of the prison led by a former prisoner. Bonus points: whale sightings. Highly recommend taking in this essential piece of South Africa’s history.

A must visit when in Cape Town - The guided tour around the island was very informative and the guide within the prison by Derek an ex-detainee was highly informative and thought provoking as he outlined the experiences of the prisoners.

Fantastic Tour - This Robbin Island trip was absolutely phenomenal. We were a group of friends. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and very informative about this Historical place and also had an amazing sense of humor which made us feel welcomed and comfortable asking questions. He brought the history to Life. Sad stories though what they went through. I would Highly recommend them as you would definitely get good value for your money. Kudos to the Tour Guide for the incredible service .

Extremely interesting and moving. - Our Bus Guide was so knowledgeable and gave such a heartfelt commentary, I had a tear in my eye. Extremely interesting and worthwhile experience. The added privilege of having an ex-prisoner as our guide during the prison tour, was such a bonus.

Worth it! - We were a group of young and not so young. Some of the people in the group had mobility issues and the staff were kind and attentive. They made sure to accommodate everyone in our group from the time we were picked up at the hotel, to the time we returned back to the hotel. Robben islands historical importance to South Africa is undeniable. The walking tour of the former prison site was guided by a former political activist inmate. To say that the experience was immersive would be an understatement. The driving portion of the tour was guided by a knowledgeable and passionate guide. This part of the tour showcased both the human and ecological present and history of the island, presenting both its natural beauty and its ugly truths. If you can, make this trip.

On our way back, we were... - On our way back, we were not dropped back, given the amount of money charged. Besides dropping us back at Waterfront, Viator had no role. After an hour at the Waterfront, Viator did not agree to drop us back. That was sad.

Not worth the price - This was overpriced as the tour guide picked us up and dropped us off at the ferry terminal, we could have gotten an Uber for much cheaper. The island tour itself was ok, a lot of it was by bus and was rushed. When we were able to tour the prison cells we were rushed along and didn’t even have time to read the descriptions. Nelson Mandala’s cell looked like all the rest. I think there is a missed opportunity here to really make people feel the gravity of apartheid and educate them. Luckily I read A Long Walk to Freedom beforehand, otherwise it wouldn’t have meant anything to me.

Unexpected - The tour was cancelled because of bad weather. Anyway who are we to question what nature decides. Doesn’t matter, we may do it the next time.

Scalping tickets is not cool - The tour of Robben Island itself was amazing. However Ivan our “tour guide” contributed nothing to it. He simply scalped the tickets, marked up the price and disappeared after handing them to us.
