A great experience about daily live in Khayelitsha - The tour was supported by Boity and Thulani. We have done the walking tour which gave us some great insights in the daily lives in the Township of Khayelitsha. Besides visiting local entrepreneurs (e.g. Sikis Coffee Bar) we have seen some great art. Also we have been informed about the cycling project for the local girls. Boity is the team leader of this team. A great example of building opportunities. If you want to get the correct insights in how a Township is set up, organized and a source for great futures, you must take this chance to contribute to their success.

Amazing township interactive experience with some amazing people! - We had a wonderful tour. OUr guides were excellent and really took us into a day in their lives living in Khayelitsha. We were given a chance to get hands on and engage a little bit in the community, as well as learn about some of the amazing community building entrepreneurship that is going on that our guides are driving. We had a six year old and three 8 year olds with us, and our guides engaged with them so well! We were so impressed and huge kudos to (ig) @storyroom_creations, @sikis_koffee and @khaltshacycles! We couldn’t stay for lunch but they insisted we get take away containers! We are so glad they did as the food was amazing!

We had many concerns before - We have given a lot of thought in advance. Many of our friends have been to Cape Town and the surrounding area, but never in a township. Many advised us not to “spoil your holiday mood”, “that’s too dangerous”, “that’s too depressing”, “I don’t want to feel guilty” or “I don’t want that to take me too much away”. After some research we decided to do it anyway and we don't regret it. On the contrary. For us, it was part of it afterwards, also to reduce prejudices and prejudices. Juma and his team show themselves and their neighborhood with confidence. We booked the 2.5 hour tour, which was optimal for us, and we also asked for pickup and drop-off transport. Booking was straightforward via the website (under More / Book online) and then via Whatsapp, via which also came the payment link. This can easily be done by credit card (or as with me via Paypal). The pickup worked flawlessly before our Airbnb. During the trip, we learned from Juma about the projects that his institution in Khayelitsha has already established and what led him to advocate for all this. All I can say is: this is living sustainability – planting vegetables so that children can learn about the cycle of nature and support themselves to families – teaching children and adults to ride and repair bicycles to promote independence – keeping young people away from drugs, for example, through creative projects and so on. We saw all this: we started in the vegetable garden (but didn’t have to plant as much there as I had feared :-), then Nomonte, a young employee, led us through Khayelitsha with its various areas (repair shops, shopping corners, marketplaces, etc.) and through the maze of all the corrugated iron huts, Mandela houses and brick houses. At the beginning we visited a creative house where young artists paint, draw, perform etc., which was very exciting. And art also plays a big role in the paths and alleys. Again and again Nomonte showed us the small and large murals, which come from known and unknown artists, each with a background. At the end of the interesting tour we still crossed the big market and visited Juma’s central bicycle school. Here with shop of own bicycle brand. And anyone who imagines second-hand crafted wires here was far from it :-). The drive home was again perfectly organized. We never felt uncomfortable or anxious once. Nomonte imparted so much knowledge, with pride and dignity of his own. Problems such as unemployment and drugs were soberly discussed, and our concern about appearing as “voyeurs” or ending up in “affected tourism” was completely unfounded. Juma then summed it up again: “Being there for us, the community, for each other – that is what is important for us here in Khayelitsha. That’s why our home means something to us.” To experience it this way (and not just to read it here) was significant for us and our holiday.

Touching, positive experience, recommended - I experienced the tour very positively. Our Guide, Aby was a very pleasant woman and made sure we definitely felt safe. She has shown us many things like a school, graffiti works, their cultural center and house magwinya for a nice snack. I recommend everyone to do this!

Authentic insight into the life of the Khayelitsha community - Our tour with Abby was great! She took a lot of time for us and is passionate about it. She grew up in the township herself and could answer any of our questions and show us everything. An interesting and authentic insight into life in Khayelitsha. The impressions there definitely make you think. Thank you for letting us have this experience. I can only recommend the tour.
