- Cheetah Outreach - Somerset West - Cheetah Outreach in Somerset West is a distinctive sanctuary focused on conservation, aiming to increase awareness about cheetahs and other endangered species.
Overview & Mission
Cheetah Outreach is a community-oriented educational facility dedicated to the conservation and survival of the free-ranging Southern African cheetah. It operates on a strong ethical basis and collaborates with cheetah ambassadors to enhance public awareness and secure funding.
Established in 1997 by Annie Beckhelling, it began with just two cheetahs and has since developed into a renowned and dynamic conservation initiative.
In addition to its on-site efforts, the organization is involved in environmental education in schools, community outreach, and farming areas, including programs with livestock guardian dogs to reduce predator–farmer conflicts.
- Hermanus Cliff Path - Hermanus is a charming coastal town located on the southern coast of the Western Cape, South Africa. Positioned between the stunning Overberg mountains and the deep blue waters of Walker Bay, it is often referred to as the “Whale Capital of the World.”
Why Hermanus?
The unique geography of Walker Bay provides calm, sheltered waters, ideal for the Southern Right Whales that migrate here from Antarctica annually between June and November.
The town is renowned for offering some of the finest land-based whale watching globally, where whales can be observed just meters from the shore.
Land-Based Viewing
The Hermanus Cliff Path extends approximately 12 km along the coast, offering excellent natural viewpoints.
From benches, rocky viewpoints, or even restaurant terraces, visitors frequently see whales breaching, spyhopping, or tail-slapping—sometimes less than 50 meters away.
Boat-Based Whale Watching
Several licensed operators offer eco-friendly boat tours, bringing guests closer to these ocean giants.
- Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate - Enjoy an optional wine tasting at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate. This premier wine tourism and lifestyle estate is located in the heart of the Walker Bay wine region, about 18 km from Hermanus and roughly an hour’s drive from Cape Town International Airport. Covering 200–220 hectares, it features vineyards, olive groves, luxurious accommodations, dining venues, and activity zones—all set against the backdrop of lagoon, ocean, and mountain views.
