- District Six - Once a vibrant inner-city residential area in Cape Town, South Africa, District Six was declared a “whites only” zone by the apartheid government in 1966. This led to the forced removal of over 60,000 residents over a decade, and the area was renamed Zonnebloem in 1970, referencing an 18th-century colonial farm. At the time, 56% of the properties were owned by Whites, 26% by Mixed-race individuals, and 18% by Indians. The majority of the community, who were of mixed race, were relocated to the Cape Flats. The envisioned white neighborhood was never developed, leaving the land largely vacant. Today, the original District Six is partially divided into the suburbs of Walmer Estate, Zonnebloem, and Lower Vrede, with much of it remaining undeveloped.
