Highlights
  • Bo-kaap - Bo-Kaap is a beautiful, quaint, and colourful suburb that nestles at the foot of Signal Hill in the City Bowl of Cape Town. Its history however is steeped in Slavery and it is also known as the ‘ Birthplace of Islam’ in the Cape. Enslaved people, artisans and political exiles were brought here from Africa, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Malaysia amongst other places.
  • Wale Street - We will meet at 71 Wale Street for an introduction to the area, providing an overview of the history of Cape Town and Bo-Kaap.
  • Atlas Trading Company - We then stop at Cape Town’s famed spice shop Atlas, where you will smell the heady aromas of spices used in everyday Cape Malay cooking. These are the same spices used by slaves as an expression of freedom in their ‘masters’ kitchens.

Peek into the past - Sedic”s passion and knowledge made the Bo Kaap come alive with the former voices of the people who used to live there. Although it’s easy to just go see the buildings you won’t know the significance of the buildings or the story of the area without him. We are thankful to have had Sedic as our guide and hope that the area is preserved as a cultural area to retain and honor those who were placed there.

Beautiful scenes - Very knowledgeable guide who was able to speak from his own and his family’s experience about living in Bo-Kaap. This is an amazing, historical place which should definitely be on anybody’s list while travelling to Cape Town!

Don't Miss Bo Kaap! - Bo Kaap is more than colorful builidings and our guide told us the history, culture and dynamism of this community. He made it come to life even by inviting us into the home of a wonderful cook and baker who shared her life story and treated us to koeksisters, a traditional pastry (like a donut hole but so much better). The people of Bo Kaap are friendly, smiling all the time and very welcoming.

Bo Kaap came alive for us through Sedick - Sedick was absolutely wonderful! It made a huge difference that he grew up and still lives in the Bo Kaap, and that his family has long been part of the community. You can feel his pride and personal commitment woven into the stories he shares and the history he details. The tour was worth every penny.

Absolutely worth it - Our tour guide was Sedick - very knowledgeable and seemed to know everyone. A very personal tour, weaving anecdotes from his own childhood to the history of Bo Kaap and a little bit on Cape Town in general. For me, going to District 6 Museum and going on Sedick's tour then tied the two experiences together. He gave a human touch to what can be seen as a "touristy" neighbourhood. Had his finger on the pulse of the issues affecting Bo Kaap. I would 100% recommend this tour as it is the people keeping the culture and character of Bo Kaap alive rather than just the colourful houses!
