- Takakkaw Falls - Situated in Yoho National Park, Takakkaw Falls is Canada’s second-highest waterfall, leaving every visitor spellbound by its beauty. The name “Yoho” is derived from a Cree expression of amazement. The trail to the falls is considered “moderately” challenging and typically takes about 20 minutes to hike. The awe-inspiring thunder of Takakkaw Falls perfectly encapsulates the wonder of Yoho National Park, with its 833 ft freefall. Visitors might even catch a glimpse of a rainbow at its base. The waterfall’s name is fittingly based on the Cree word for “wonderful.” Yoho is also renowned for Burgess Shale fossils, so keep an eye out as you head to Takakkaw Falls.
The falls are fed by meltwater from the Daly Glacier, part of the expansive 15-square-mile Waputik Icefield.
This is truly one of Canada’s most magnificent sights, and with a short hike to reach it, it’s easily accessible!
- Wapta Falls - Although smaller than Takakkaw, Wapta Falls is still impressive at 98 feet high. Named after the icefield that nourishes both Wapta and Takakkaw Falls, it offers an easy hike with breathtaking views of the near-frozen falls. The 2.4 km trail to the falls is well-trodden.
This hike is relatively easy, with a slight challenge at the end. It’s unique to view the falls from above and then descend to the base, allowing for appreciation from all angles. The water’s power at the base is immense, with the noise of crashing water creating a mist that feels refreshing on a clear mountain day. On a hot day, the cool mist is especially welcome. However, if you plan to take extended photos, consider bringing a raincoat.
Duration: 4.6 km (2.9 miles) round trip
