A Journey to the Temple in the Clouds

The day began before the sun had even considered rising. At 5 am, I found myself being whisked away from the bustling streets of Siem Reap, embarking on a journey that promised to be as enlightening as it was exhilarating. The first stop was Preah Vihear Temple, perched atop a 525-meter cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains. The drive up the steep hill in a 4-wheel drive was an adventure in itself, with the vehicle navigating the rugged terrain like a seasoned explorer.

As we reached the summit, the view was nothing short of breathtaking. The Cambodian countryside stretched out before us, a patchwork of greens and browns that seemed to go on forever. The temple itself, an ancient Hindu structure, stood proudly against the backdrop of the sky, its history etched into every stone. Our guide, Mr. Sok Phally, shared tales of the temple’s past, weaving a narrative that brought the ancient stones to life. The Pyramid of Koh Ker

After a morning of high-altitude exploration, we descended from the clouds and made our way to Koh Ker. This site, once a thriving city of the Khmer Empire, is home to the impressive Prasat Thom, a seven-tiered pyramid that rises 36 meters into the air. Unlike the concentric designs of other Khmer temples, this linear structure was a marvel to behold.

Climbing the pyramid was a test of endurance, but the view from the top was a reward worth every step. Our final destination was Beng Mealea, often referred to as the sister of Angkor Wat. Unlike its more famous sibling, Beng Mealea remains largely unrestored, with stone blocks scattered across the ground like pieces of a forgotten puzzle. This temple, shrouded in mystery and overgrown with jungle, had a haunting beauty that was both captivating and eerie.

Walking through the ruins, I felt like an explorer discovering a lost world. The silence was profound, broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves or the distant call of a bird.
