On the first day of the trek, the journey begins in the quaint village of Pumahuanca, nestled in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Here, the operator will introduce the wonderful team, which includes a herd of llamas, porters, a skilled chef specializing in Peruvian cuisine, and an emergency horse. The group will gently ascend one of the side valleys, covering approximately 14km and climbing about 1150m / 3373ft towards the village of Cuyoc. Along the route, there will be a visit to the small Inca site of Pumahuanca, with opportunities to learn about the native plants, flowers, and birds of the region. This path is unique to this company, allowing for a peaceful and tranquil experience. Due to the area’s low visitor numbers, there is a good chance of spotting Viscachas (a type of rabbit) and possibly an Andean Fox. The campsite for the night is at an altitude of 4100m / 13451ft. The terrain is quite barren at this height, and snow is not uncommon during the dry season, so gloves and a hat are recommended.
Duration: 10 hours
Stop At: Lares, Lares, Cusco Region
DAY 2: CUYOC - YANACOCHA - CUNCANI - LARES
Today is the most breathtaking day of the trek and is easier than the previous day. The journey is a 19km walk to Lares Hot Springs, mostly downhill after a 2-hour pass walk. Participants will witness snow-capped peaks, mountain lakes, and meet local Inca descendants dressed in vibrant red. There will be opportunities to learn about their culture and even some Quechua Inca phrases for communication. After lunch, there will be a visit to a local family’s home to get acquainted with them. Later, the hike continues to the Lares hot springs, passing through small communities where Quinua and Tarwi are cultivated. The campsite is right by the hot springs, offering a chance to relax in the hot pools. The activity involves hiking from Unupunku to Lares hot spring, meeting the local Inca descendant community in Cuncani. Overnight stay is at Lares hot springs (3200m / 10464 ft). The hike takes approximately 7-8 hours and is of moderate difficulty. This is the highest point reached during the trek.
