- Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary) - The Hanging Church is named for its position above a gatehouse of the Babylon Fortress, a Roman fortress in Coptic Cairo (Old Cairo). Its nave is suspended over a passage, and the church is accessed by twenty-nine steps. Early visitors to Cairo called it “the Staircase Church.” Over time, the land surface has risen by about six meters since the Roman era, burying most of the Roman tower and diminishing the church’s elevated appearance.
- Synagogue Ben Ezra - Located in Old Cairo, the Synagogue Ben Ezra is the oldest synagogue in Egypt, believed to have been built in 882 CE by the Jewish community of Fustat. Named after Rabbi Ben Ezra, a notable Jewish scholar from the 10th century, the synagogue is a significant site for both Jews and Muslims, symbolizing the long history of coexistence between the two faiths in Egypt. It has undergone several restorations and stands today as a testament to Egypt’s rich cultural heritage.
- Church of St. Barbara - The Church of St. Barbara is one of Old Cairo’s historically significant churches. Initially dedicated to St. Cyrus and St. John, who were venerated for their healing powers, a small church in the building’s northeastern corner commemorates these martyrs. Documents from the 13th century indicate that St. Barbara’s relics were housed in this church. Many valuable items, including two door panels, a wooden screen, an icon, and Bible caskets, were moved to the nearby Coptic Museum. The church’s basilican structure and tripartite sanctuary closely resemble those of Abu Sarga. The Church of St. Barbara contains some of the rarest icons.
- Coptic Cairo - This church is dedicated to Sergius and Bacchus, soldier-saints martyred in the 4th century in Syria by Roman Emperor Maximian. The most intriguing feature is the crypt where Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus are believed to have rested. The crypt is 10 meters deep and often floods when Nile levels are high.
