• Cairo Citadel - The Gem Explore Egyptologist will meet you at your chosen location to begin your adventure in Cairo, heading to the largest Islamic Monument, the Cairo Citadel, also known as Saladin Citadel. Dating back to the 11th century, it was constructed by the renowned warrior Saladin and his minister. The Citadel boasts 13 fortified towers and 7 mosques, serving as the seat of government and the residence of rulers for over 700 years. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about Egypt’s modern history. Following this, you will visit one of the Islamic marvels, the Mohammed Ali Mosque.
• Mosque of Muhammad Ali - The Mosque of Mohammed Ali Basha, or the Alabaster Mosque, is an Ottoman Mosque with uniquely tall minarets (86m). The interior domes are gold-plated, and the walls are made of alabaster both inside and out. The Mosque was completed in 1848 AD.
• Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - The tour continues with a visit to Islamic Cairo, home to the most significant and renowned Islamic monuments. Founded by Amr Ibn Al-A’as around 640 AD, the tour begins with the Mosque-Madrassa of Al Sultan Hassan. Built between 1356 and 1363 AD by order of Al Sultan Hassan-An-Nassir, it is celebrated for its impressive size and Mamluki Islamic architecture. The tour then proceeds to AL Rifa’ei Mosque, constructed in the 19th century with a more modern design to complement its 14th-century neighbor.
• Al-Rifai Mosque - Situated in Citadel Square, next to the Cairo Citadel, the Mosque now serves as the royal mausoleum for Muhammad Ali’s family. Located opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, it was completed in 1912. In addition to the royal family, you will also find the tomb of the last Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi.
• Coptic Cairo - After a lunch break, embark on another journey with your Tour Guide through Cairo to the religiously significant area known as Coptic Cairo. Part of Old Cairo, it includes the Babylon Fortress, Hanging Church, Greek Church of St. George, Saints Sergius and Bacchus, and numerous Coptic churches. Christian tradition holds that the Holy Family stayed at the site of Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church to avoid the Roman army. Your guide will provide further insights into Christianity in Egypt.
• Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary) - Around Fort Babylon, some of the oldest Egyptian Christian churches were built. This area, a pilgrimage destination for people of various faiths worldwide, contains Roman fortification ruins and several churches, including the Hanging Church.
• Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus - The tour continues with a visit to the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus. It is traditionally believed to be built on the site where the Holy Family, Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus Christ, rested at the end of their journey into Egypt. They may have resided here while Joseph worked at the fortress. The church holds significant historical importance and is where many patriarchs of the Coptic Church were elected.
• Synagogue Ben Ezra - The tour proceeds to the Ben Ezra Synagogue, located in the Fustat area of Old Cairo, Egypt. According to local legend, it is situated where baby Moses was discovered. The synagogue’s geniza, or storeroom, was found in the 19th century to contain a treasure trove of forgotten Hebrew, Aramaic, and Judeo-Arabic secular and sacred manuscripts.
• Al-Hussein Mosque - Near Khan Elkhalili, one of Egypt’s most sacred Islamic sites, this mosque is believed to be the burial place of Hussein’s head, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed. The mosque has recently been renovated, offering a great opportunity for photography.
• Khan Al-Khalili - The tour concludes with a visit to Khan El-Khalili Bazaar, located in Cairo’s historic center. Established as a trade center during the Mamluk era, the Bazaar offers a wide variety of products, including silver, copper, brassware, gold, and leather goods.
