- Abbey Island - Situated at the western end of Derrynane Strand is Ahamore Abbey on Abbey Island. This monastic site, established by St Finian in the 6th Century, boasts the ruins of a 12th Century Romanesque church in a picturesque setting. Visitors can walk along the sands at low tide from Derrynane House to reach the Abbey or drive to a nearby beach section.
- Waterville - Departing from Derrynane, several viewpoints along the Ring of Kerry offer breathtaking views of the southwest tip of the Iveragh Peninsula and the surrounding basin and landscape of Waterville. As the journey crosses the mountain pass, a rich tapestry of stone walls and ringforts becomes visible below the road. The seaside town of Waterville is also a great spot for a lunch break of about an hour.
- Skellig Ring Scenic Drive - This loop of narrow roads diverges from the Ring of Kerry, tracing the rugged coastline. Stops along these lanes provide access to the ruins of Ballinskelligs Castle and, further along the shore, Ballinskelligs Priory. Approaching the Atlantic coast, stunning views of the Skellig Islands unfold, and St Finian’s Bay can be explored from the small surfing beach.
- Kerry Cliffs - Towering 300m above the wild Atlantic coastline, these cliffs offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Skelligs and the surrounding landscape. A steep walk from the car park requires a moderate level of fitness to enjoy the views from here. There are a few alternative viewpoints in the area that, while not as high, offer outstanding vistas of the Skellig Rocks from the parking area! The nearby fishing town of Portmagee is also a great option for a lunch break of about an hour.
- Valentia Lighthouse - Positioned on the northern side of Valentia Island at Cromwell Point, the lighthouse marks the safe channel into Knightstown and Caherciveen harbors. This area is incredibly scenic, with stunning views towards Dingle and the Blasket Islands, easy access to the rugged coastline, and atmospheric ruins. Other fascinating spots on Valentia Island offer exquisite views of the Skellig Rocks.
- Cahergall Fort - Cahergall and Leacanabuaile Stone Forts, dating from the 7th Century, are excellent examples of medieval ringforts or cashels. Research suggests they were built as “defended farmsteads” by an early Christian community. The ruins of the 16th Century Ballycarbery Castle are nearby, and excellent views of it can be captured from the road and shoreline.
- Rossbeigh Beach - Rossbeigh Beach is a sandbar extending 4 miles into Dingle Bay. Spectacular views are available from the road as visitors drive down to the beach, where they can explore the sand and surf. It is a perfect location for capturing the sunset if the tour timing aligns with the sun setting over the Atlantic Ocean.

I’ve been a regular visitor to County Kerry throughout my life, as my mother was originally from Dingle. I’ve been living in Kerry for over 20 years and I’ve spent the best part of the last 30 years discovering great locations to capture the beauty of the area as a landscape photographer.
