During the Meiji period (1868-1912), the area became a new residential area. Today, however, it is more of a nostalgic townscape, with remnants of buildings from the Taisho and early Showa periods. - Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street - You’ll find a true piece of shitamachi culture here at Yanaka Ginza! The Yanesen area derives its name from the three districts it encompasses: Yanaka, Nezu, and Sendagi. This is due to its preservation of the retro ambiance of the “Shitamachi” suburb, a characteristic that has earned it a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike.

Yanesen stands as a testament to Tokyo’s rich history, with numerous structures dating back to the Edo period still standing proudly, having survived the ravages of World War II bombings.

Many of these edifices have been repurposed into charming cafes and restaurants, adding a touch of modern to the area while retaining their historical essence. As a result, these establishments have become not only local favorites but also sought-after destinations for tourists seeking an authentic glimpse into Tokyo’s past.

• Please understand that the route might be altered and some spots might be skipped to end the tour on time.
• We are not responsible for external causes that might affect the tour, such as bad weather or late arrival of customers at the meeting place.
• Refund requests that involve external causes among the reasons will not be accepted.
• We will walk for three hours during this tour, please wear comfortable shoes.
• In case one or more participants will be joining the tour with a wheelchair we will avoid stairs. However please understand that we will take uphill roads that require more effort.
