Highlights

During the tour, a wide array of sights will be seen within a relatively small section of Pest. The Jewish Quarter in the seventh district is quite compact, making walking the ideal way to explore it.

No matter which direction the walk begins in the quarter, numerous attractions will be encountered, from the second largest non-Orthodox synagogue in the world to the smallest prayer houses, charming residential buildings, and significant memorial sites. Each location is remarkable, with its own unique story. Some highlights of the itinerary may already be familiar, but participating in the tour offers a fresh perspective: the synagogues of Budapest’s so-called synagogue triangle, including the Kazinczy, the Rumbach, and the Dohány Street Synagogue, the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Garden with the poignant Emmanuel tree, the Budapest Jewish Museum and the Jewish Archives exhibitions, the Vasvári Street Synagogue, the Carl Lutz Memorial, the stumbling stones in the quarter’s streets, the last remaining section of the WWII ghetto wall, and the iconic Shoes Monument on the Danube riverbank.

Additionally, the tour includes visits to places frequented by locals, providing a glimpse into their daily lives: courtyards like the Gozsdu Courtyard, small shops, eateries, confectioneries, the mikveh on Kazinczy Street, art galleries, festival venues, old and newly opened cafés, and the unique ruin bars, including the iconic Szimpla. Immerse yourself in the atmosphere! The itinerary is highly flexible. If there is a deeper interest in a particular place or a desire to spend more time somewhere, adjustments can be made. The goal is to provide a comprehensive overview filled with stories rather than just facts, making the tour as informative, engaging, and enjoyable as possible.

Wonderful, insightful tour - Timea was very knowledgeable about the Jewish history in Budapest. She was able to show us sites and historic locations that were significant to the history of the city. Given our interest in architecture, she also took us see buildings that were not only historically significant, but had a story about the building design as well and its evolution over time. Everything was woven together well and had tons of little factoids the entire way. She definitely has good connections in the city and we felt we saw off the beaten path sights. She followed up with lots of links and information about what we talked about, gave recommendations for things to do in the city, and made the tour very personalized to us. She was very nice and great to spend time with. I would definitely recommend Timea.

Our most memorable tour... ever. - Best way to sum up the tour, our most memorable... ever. Tarjani, our guide, created a meaningful, informative, yet personal walk thru Budapest's Jewish Quarter. We appreciated her stories and attention to detail while sharing with us her personal connection to the area. Tarjani addressed our many questions with patience and interest ensuring we finished the tour with an even great appreciation for how the people of the Quarter lived and endured. Could not recommend joining her for a tour more highly. She is amazing. Tarjani, thank you, as you made our walk thru the Jewish Quarter very meaningful.

Insightful and personal tour - Timea gave us an informative and personal tour of the Budapest Jewish quarter. We learned so much from her about the history of the community. Timea guided us to hidden locations of the WW II ghetto wall and former Jewish homes. She told us about the fates of the leaders of the Budapest Jewish community, and all their contributions to the Hungarian communal life. Especially important Timea was sensitive to our needs, stopping for us to rest and purchase water. Because of our interest in Community Gardens, she included a Budapest example of these gardens in our tour. At the end of the tour, Timea guided us to a lovely restaurant for lunch. Our experience with Timea today was A++. My husband and I highly recommend her.

Highlight of our trip - If you are going to Budapest, I would highly recommend a Jewish tour with Timea Tarjani. Before we left home, Timea sent an email as to acquaint us with the history of the Jewish community in Hungry. She gave us sites to peruse so we could understand the past as well as the present. On the day of the tour, Timea met us at our hotel. It was obvious from the start that she was enthusiastic and passionate about her country. She made us feel very comfortable as we started our walking tour of the city. She was very engaging and knowledgeable as she is a history teacher and has a wealth of information. Timea is multilingual, she speaks phenomenal English as well as Hebrew. She is very sensitive in explaining the complicated historical events leading up to and during the holocaust. By the end of the tour, we definitely felt that we were able to see and understand all the Jewish sights of Budapest. Thank you Timea and we will take the extra time needed to read and watch all the links that you sent after our tour.
