- Strada 11 Iunie 17 - Experience an intimate and enlightening wine tasting session at Bucharest’s first wine bar to reopen after the 1989 revolution. Nestled within a century-old house, the bar boasts an elegant interior, with wine bottles displayed like books on shelves, creating a perfect ambiance.
Participants will savor four different varieties of local wines, accompanied by a plate of traditional cheese and charcuterie, while exploring the unique “terroir” of Dealu Mare, Romania’s most renowned wine region. Similar to Bordeaux or Tuscany, Dealu Mare is situated near the 45th parallel, enjoys a warm climate until late September, and features predominantly clay or limestone-based soils, providing ideal conditions for red wines.
The guide will provide insights into the various wine varieties and share the history of the local wine industry, including the challenges faced during the Soviet occupation and communist era following World War II, when private property was seized, brands were dismantled, and mass production policies compromised quality.
Following the 1989 revolution that ended communism, Romania gradually began to rebuild its wine sector, striving to reclaim its position among the top 10 winemakers (currently the 12th largest producer globally).
