Awesome time for families - Great family experience my husband and I brought our kids 8 and 2- 10 year olds. It was a great time, our guide Eellery was awesome. He did dad jokes, let us play in the whirlpool and pointed out different things to look at. He put my kids at ease they were afraid at first but that instantly went away. I would highly recommend this place for families.

Bucolic Class 1 rafting for the family - Home to Olympic white-water kayaking and family rafting trips, the Nantahala Outdoor Center sends thousands of rafters down the river daily during the season. While my husband went fly fishing with a local guide, I joined the 9 a.m. Class 1 river raft ride with a family of three – a beautiful float with a few rapids splashing the front paddlers. The company is super safety conscious – we had nearly an hour of safety tips, including a movie and demonstrations. (We had been snuggly fitted in our life jackets before being seated for the movie – a little premature especially in the warm weather.)
We were bused to the launch site near the dam that controls the river flow, the last chance to hit the outhouses. Our guide greeted us with the joke that this was his first trip, although he later said he had completed thousands. We spent about two hours floating and paddling down the river, under the lush canopy of chestnut, sycamore and rhododendron trees for an idyllic, dreamlike float with a few easy rapids. We took out at the center – our guided pointed out that NOC is the only company, that only requires one, rather than two bus rides.
Afternoon rafters often get rain, so we were glad we opted for the sunny 9 a.m. departure at a discount. Several signs along the way reminded us to tip our guide.

Perfect for family - My husband and I have done this twice before this trip. We’ve been wanting to take our kids and they are finally a good age, 14,13,10. Kids were nervous but we knew they could handle it. Don our guide was absolutely amazing. He was very assertive and knowledgeable but he made our trip so fun. Our kids can’t wait to go back!

First time NOC on Nantahala - First timer rafting family. Best time ever! Guide (Rose) was great. Keeping the trip fun and exciting. We performed a water rescue of another rafter that had fallen out of his raft. She handled it like a Pro. Couple suggestions- NOC requires shoes with straps, so no slides, flip flops, etc. They will rent you booties for $8. Probably a good idea to keep your feet warm. The water is cold! 40's! Water will be over your feet at time as raft takes in water.
Put any smaller children in front. I needed to grab my 11 year old at least a couple of times to pull him back in. I know this is a very tame experience compared to other floats but first time kids need a close eye on them, especially at first. Also, several nice eating venues on site. Made it easy to get out the river and get a meal. Would definitely recommend the trip.

Expensive - Nice, but very expensive. Also, I paid $70 for an email of my photos that I can then pay to have printed. After eating there, it was a $600 afternoon
