- Garrison - Starting in 1655, large fleets of British ships and soldiers frequently visited Barbados, establishing it as their operational base. In 1780, the British Government decided to station a permanent garrison on the island, leading to the construction of the Garrisons. The Garrison in Barbados is the largest in the Caribbean. Many buildings were made from London bricks, which were brought as ballast in ships that returned with sugar. Approximately 60 of the original buildings still exist today. The Savannah was initially a rocky area inhabited by many crabs and had to be filled and leveled for troop practice. It was also the birthplace of cricket in Barbados and now serves as the island’s racetrack. On November 30th, 1966, Barbados gained Independence under Premier Errol Walton Barrow, officially becoming a sovereign and independent state within the Commonwealth.
