Construction of this 900 mm line started in 1897, during Georgia’s time under the Russian Empire. Due to challenging terrain, it took four years to complete, with the first train operating in January 1902. Gustave Eiffel was tasked by the Romanovs to design the bridge over the Tsemistskhali River between Tsaghveri and Tsemi stations. Initially, trains were powered by a “Porter” type steam engine from America, with passengers traveling in open carriages secured by handrails. The line was electrified in 1966, replacing the steam engine with an electric “crocodile” locomotive from the Škoda works in Czechoslovakia. The journey takes 2.5 hours, with an average speed of 15 km/h.
- Bakuriani - Bakuriani is a village and ski resort situated at 1,700 meters above sea level. The area around Bakuriani is rich in coniferous forests, predominantly spruce. The current landscape was shaped by lava flows from the nearby Mukhera volcano. The resort’s ski area is divided into two sections: Didveli and Kokhta/Kokhta-Mitarbi. Mount Kokhta offers a maximum skiable height of 2,269 meters, while the highest lift in Didveli reaches 2,702 meters.
- Borjomi Central Park - Borjomi is a resort town with a population of 10,546, known for its balneological and climatic treatments. The town includes several districts, notably Likani, Papa, and Plateau, which are ideal for therapeutic purposes. The primary treatment involves mineral water for drinking and balneological procedures. Other treatments include climatotherapy and mud therapy, with the best time for climatotherapy being June to October. Medical indications include chronic gastrointestinal, liver, and biliary tract diseases, metabolic disorders, and some cardiovascular conditions. The resort is open year-round. Borjomi is renowned for its stunning nature and unique mineral waters. A must-visit is the “Mineral Water Park,” dating back to the 1850s, offering a delightful experience throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy the natural Borjomi mineral water and relax in a picturesque setting.
- Green (Mtsvane) Monastery - The Chitakhevi Church of Saint George is a medieval church that was abandoned for over two centuries before being restored in 2003. The monastery’s history remains largely unknown. A surge in pilgrimage occurred due to the belief that stones in the nearby stream turned reddish after a massacre of local monks by soldiers of the Persian Shah Tahmasp I in the 1550s. The monastery comprises a three-nave basilica, dated to the late 9th or 10th century, and a two-storey bell tower, dated to the 15th or 16th century. Nearby are remnants of old monastic cells and other structures. The church is constructed from roughly hewn ashlar and rubble, with plain internal and external walls lacking significant decoration. Traces of frescoes, likely from the 12th or 13th century, remain in the apse and on the west wall. A two-storey bell tower stands a few meters southeast of the church.
