Mahabodhi Temple - The Mahabodhi Temple, also known as the Mahābodhi Mahāvihāra, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This ancient, yet restored, Buddhist temple in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India, marks the site where Buddha is believed to have achieved enlightenment.
Great Buddha Statue - The 80-foot Buddha statue is a significant stop on the Buddhist pilgrimage and tourist routes in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India. This impressive statue, made of sandstone blocks and red granite, is possibly the largest in India. It was consecrated on November 18, 1989, by the 14th Dalai Lama, with its foundation stone laid in 1982.
Thai Monastery - The Thai Monastery, Wat Thai Buddhagaya, was established in 1956 by the Thai government at the request of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to strengthen ties between the two nations. Built to spread Buddhist philosophies, it is the only Thai Temple in India. Known for its exceptional architecture and beauty, it resembles Bangkok’s temples with its richly gilt and ornamental design. The temple’s sanctum houses a beautifully carved bronze statue of Lord Buddha, and a 25-meter high statue of Buddha has been recently added to the garden.
Royal Bhutan Monastery - The Royal Bhutan Monastery is a stunning Buddhist monastery in Bodhgaya, Bihar. It features clay carvings depicting significant events from Gautam Buddha’s life, attracting millions of followers worldwide. Constructed by the King of Bhutan as a tribute to Lord Buddha, the monastery impresses with its splendid architecture, tranquility, and a seven-foot-tall Buddha statue.
Indosan Nippon Japanese Temple - Built in 1972 with support from international Buddhist communities, the Indosan Nippon Japanese Temple is beautifully crafted from wood, resembling a Japanese shrine. It exemplifies Japanese architecture and Buddhist culture. Located about 15 km from the city center, it is a popular temple in Bodh Gaya. The temple was built to preserve and promote Buddhism and Buddha’s teachings, with walls inscribed with his teachings and a gallery of Japanese paintings depicting key events in Buddha’s life.
Metta Buddharam Temple - Established in 2002 by the Thai Buddhist community in Bodh Gaya, the Metta Buddharam Temple symbolizes devotion and gratitude toward the sacred site of Buddha’s enlightenment. “Metta” means loving-kindness or friendship, reflecting the essence of compassion central to Buddhist teachings. The temple features Thai-style architecture with a striking stainless steel exterior adorned with mirror mosaics, creating a shimmering effect. It serves as a sacred space and spiritual learning center, hosting meditation sessions, workshops, and Dharma talks.
Sujata Kuti - Sujata, sometimes called Nandabala, was a village woman from Bakraur who offered Prince Siddhartha a bowl of milk-rice (kheer), ending his extreme asceticism. This act of compassion restored his strength and set him on the Middle Way, leading to his enlightenment. The structure dates back to around the 2nd century BCE, confirmed by artifacts found nearby. Excavations revealed a plaque inscribed with “Devapala Rajasya Sujata Griha,” interpreted as “Sujata House of King Devapala,” indicating a 9th-century CE Pala dynasty enhancement.
Dungeshwari Cave Temples - The Dungeshwari Hills, also known as Pragbodhi, are located about 12 km northeast of Bodh Gaya along the Falgu River. According to Buddhist tradition, Siddhartha Gautama (the future Buddha) spent about six years in intense meditation and asceticism in these caves before realizing their futility and moving to Bodh Gaya, where he attained enlightenment. The cave complex includes three main caves, one housing a golden, emaciated Buddha sculpture symbolizing his extreme penance.
