• Blue Bay Marine Park - Blue Bay Marine Park is one of the top spots in Mauritius to witness stunning marine life and enjoy snorkeling. At the park, you can either view the underwater world from a glass-bottom boat or dive in for a snorkeling experience.

Snorkeling is highly recommended due to the park’s vibrant and beautiful marine flora and fauna.

With an average depth of 5.5 meters and crystal-clear waters providing excellent visibility, the snorkeling conditions are perfect. You’ll get a fantastic view of the reef, fish, and a wide variety of corals.

The park is home to mangroves, algae, seagrasses, corals, and various marine organisms. You’ll also find a diverse range of fish species, including Damselfish, Surgeonfish, Butterflyfish, juvenile Sailfin tangs, as well as tiny Pipefish and Trumpetfish.

After lunch, you’ll visit the National History Museum of Mauritius in Mahebourg, which offers a historical journey of the island dating back to the 18th century.

The museum’s collection includes ethnological and historical artifacts, documents, prints, paintings, maps, miniature sculptures by Mauritian artist Prosper D’Epinay, and marine archaeological finds from historic shipwrecks.

You’ll also see artifacts from various shipwrecks, including bones of extinct Giant Tortoises and the Dodo, which testify to their existence until a few hundred years ago. The museum also displays railway items, including a model of a double-decker coach, reminding visitors of Mauritius’s former railway system.

• Mahebourg Waterfront - Afterward, visit the Mahebourg waterfront to learn about Mauritius’s culture and history. Located in a traditional Mauritian village, the new Mahebourg Waterfront is perfect for a relaxing walk and a journey back in time, exploring local history.

You’ll learn about the epic battle fought in this region and see the Bataille de le Passe memorial, which honors the fighters who lost their lives. The panoramic view of the battle site is also a highlight.

The Mahebourg Waterfront is ideal for long seaside walks, offering beautiful natural settings and remarkable sea views. Don’t miss the sight of the island ‘Mouchoir Rouge’ at the end of the quay, a truly amazing view!

• Bazar Street - Then, head to the Mahebourg local market, a vibrant place to experience local culture. You’ll find amazing products at great bargains. Initially focused on silks and textiles, the market now offers a wide variety of seashells and typical market products like vegetables, fruits, local handicrafts, and souvenirs.

Don’t miss the food at the Mahebourg Market, with a large selection of street food like Briyani, Dholl Puri (lentil pancakes), Chinese Noodles, and the famous Gato Pima (split pea fritters). These delicious treats are worth trying, and we won’t tell your diet!

• Frederick Hendrick Museum - On the way, visit the Frederick Hendrick Museum, a historical site with remnants of the first human settlement in Mauritius. Located at Old Grand Port, this site bears witness to Dutch and French colonial settlements on the island’s southeast coast.

The museum is surrounded by a lush tropical garden and includes a visitor center with an exhibition of artifacts found during archaeological excavations since 1997. The ruins include building materials, military objects, everyday life artifacts, and food remains.

• Pointe Canon - Pointe Canon offers a great overview of the sites surrounding Mahebourg. You’ll see the imposing Lion Mountain, sugar cane fields, Mouchoir Rouge islet, and Ile aux Aigrettes, a small protected island and nature reserve.

Pointe Canon is a gathering place for local events like regattas and the commemoration of the abolition of slavery in February. It was once a coastal artillery location with anti-ship cannons and fortifications to protect against sea invasions. Today, it serves as a historical viewpoint and a relaxing spot, with panoramic views of the southeast and the ocean.

• La Vanille Nature Park - Finally, visit La Vanille Crocodile Park to discover the flora and fauna endemic to Mauritius. You’ll observe animals like Nile Crocodiles, tenrecs, eels, iguanas, and turtles from Madagascar and Seychelles.

The park also features a collection of fossils of extinct animals from Mauritius and surrounding islands, such as the dodo and the elephant bird of Madagascar. The insectarium houses a rare collection of insect species from around the world.
