- Bishkek - The tour kicks off with a 30-minute ride in a classic Soviet Zhiguli, taking you past some of the city’s most renowned sights. Feel the engine’s power and appreciate the straightforward elegance of Soviet design as you manually roll down the windows and soak in the lively streets. Throughout the journey, your guide will share intriguing tales about Bishkek’s history, providing an ideal introduction to the city.
- Vladimir Lenin Statue - We’ll pause at the Lenin statue, where you can enjoy a unique photoshoot with the Zhiguli, dressed in traditional Kyrgyz or Soviet military attire, with Lenin towering in the background.
From this point, we’ll embark on a walking tour of Bishkek’s city center, exploring its most famous landmarks. You’ll encounter the Marx and Engels statue, the old Christian church that was transformed into an exhibition hall by the communists, and discover how foreign experts — including Czechoslovak engineers and architects — contributed to shaping “Frunze” (the Soviet name for Bishkek). Their legacy is still evident today in the so-called “Czech Quarter” of the city.
As you proceed, your guide will bring history to life as you visit the Kurmanzhan Datka statue, the Jogorku Kenesh (Parliament), and admire the grand Soviet mosaics at the Ala-Too cinema. After this brief walk, we’ll return to the Zhiguli and continue our drive, delving deeper into the capital to reveal more of Bishkek’s hidden gems.
- Bishkek Railway Station - Next, we’ll drive to Bishkek’s Soviet-era railway station, a remarkable example of mid-20th-century Soviet architecture that remains in use today. Opened in the 1930s and expanded in the 1940s–1950s, it once served as the gateway connecting Kyrgyzstan to the far reaches of the USSR.
Here you can admire the impressive façade and clock tower, crafted in the monumental Soviet style, and step back into a time when trains were the lifeline of the entire Soviet Union. Even today, you’ll see old Soviet carriages alongside modern trains, a living testament to the city’s communist past. Notably, Bishkek still operates direct sleeper trains to Moscow, a travel tradition that has endured long after the Soviet Union’s dissolution.
- Victory Square - We’ll then drive our Zhiguli to Victory Square, home to one of Bishkek’s most significant monuments. Built in 1984 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War (World War II), the memorial honors the thousands of Kyrgyz soldiers who never returned from the front.
At its center stands an eternal flame, sheltered beneath three monumental granite arches designed to resemble a yurt, symbolizing both Kyrgyz heritage and the sorrow of mothers who awaited their sons’ return. The square remains a central gathering place on May 9th, when Bishkek celebrates Victory Day with ceremonies and parades.
Here, you’ll have the opportunity to walk through the memorial, contemplate its symbolism, and capture striking photos of one of the city’s most iconic Soviet-era landmarks before we continue our journey.
- Ala-Too Square - We’ll conclude the tour by dropping you off at Ala-Too Square, where our journey began, or at a convenient location near the city center. If preferred, we can also drop you off at a spot along the way back to our garage. It’s the perfect way to end your time-travel experience through Bishkek — from Soviet streets and monuments to the living history that continues to shape the city today.
