The ride takes us through the State Park, pausing at breathtaking vistas of the Park and the Pacific Ocean.
- Old Coast Road - The journey continues for about 5 miles along the Old Coast Road, from Andrew Molera State Park into the Little Sur River Valley, before turning back. This route offers expansive views and varies with the seasons, being either dry and dusty or muddy. Be prepared for some loose dirt and gravel on the long hills.
- Andrew Molera State Park - Our initial stop is a scenic overlook where the Big Sur River meets the Ocean at “smugglers beach,” offering a stunning view and intriguing history.
- Big Sur - As the hill is ascended, the Big Sur Valley unfolds below, showcasing the river’s path to the sea.
- El Sur Ranch - More than half of the ride is flanked by the expansive, 7,100-acre El Sur Ranch on both sides of the Old Coast Road. This working cattle ranch, established in 1834, is one of the few remaining intact original Mexican land grants. Depending on the season, cattle from the ranch may be seen grazing along the road, with pastures always filled with cattle by the ocean. It’s one of the most picturesque cattle ranches imaginable.
- Little Sur River - After conquering the first major hill, the descent leads into the Little Sur River Valley, part of the San Andreas Fault system. The river meanders through a stunning redwood forest, with towering trees, fern-covered cliffs, and the soothing sound of the river below, evoking a prehistoric ambiance.
- Pico Blanco - This white marble peak accompanies the ride, serving as a sacred mountain to the Esselen tribes and providing a breathtaking focal point throughout the journey.
- Point Sur State Historic Park - As the tour ascends, the view extends to the distant Point Sur Light Station. Discover the fascinating history that led to the establishment of this lighthouse.
