Feel the warmth of steam vents and stroll through an old lava tube embedded in the chilly haze of the Hawaiian rainforest. Wrap up the day by delighting your senses in Hilo town, featuring the stunning Rainbow Falls, Liliuokalani Gardens, and delectable locally brewed chocolates and coffee, all part of this intimate group excursion.
- Operates in all weather conditions (be prepared for sun, wind and rain).
- Covered walking shoes are required and a jacket is highly recommended.
- Participants must be able to walk a minimum of 1.5 miles on uneven terrain.
- We do not guarantee you will see molten lava on this tour.
- HOTEL pick-up is offered for select HILO HOTELS ONLY. If you are staying outside of Hilo, please plan to meet at the Hilo Mo’oheau Bus Terminal (please confirm at time of booking).
- CRUISE SHIP passengers, we pick-up directly at the PORT OF HILO and will adjust the tour time as needed to accommodate your ships time in port.
- For a one DAY TRIP to the Big Island, please make your travel arrangements to and from the HILO AIRPORT. Schedule your flight arrival a minimum of 30 minutes prior to the tour start time AND provide your flight details at time of booking.
- Children ages 8 years and up may participate in tour. All participants must have a paid seat. We do not allow any “lap” children.
- Kilauea volcano is an active volcano, you may be exposed to volcanic gas on this tour.
- This tour cannot accommodate guests with wheelchairs, scooters or oxygen tanks.

Wonderful Experience with Mauka Makai Adventures. - My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our Hilo Shore Excursion with Mauka Makai Adventures. Our excursion was on September 23, 2025 and we toured with Jill who was very knowledgeable and fun to be with. She is born and raised in Hilo and has a wealth of knowledge about the area and Hawaiian history. We experienced Rainbow Falls, Kilauea volcano, walked through a lava tube, Hawaiian rainforest, beautiful gardens in Hilo and visited the Big Island Chocolate Factory. Family members have told us that the chocolate treats we brought them were the best chocolates they have ever tasted. We highly recommend Mauka Makai Adventures !!
P.S. Their Mercedes Benz Sprinter Passenger Van is spotless inside and out!!

Great tour, knowledgeable guide very happy to answer any questions along the way! - This is a great small family business we got to see lava erupting, and our tour guide was very knowledgeable! It’s a small group excursion and there are a few options for getting there, we took a cruise and they met us at the cruise terminal, super easy meet up in the cruise terminal, also picked up a few people from a couple hotels and at the downtown bus terminal, so lots of ways to meet up with the group, in a nice passenger van.
I highly recommend this trip! I’m a travel agent and like to try things before recommending to my clients, this is an amazing tour, we had a couple nature walks, got to see an active volcano having some eruptions, walking through a lava tube, a beautiful waterfall, got to check out the Big Island Chocolate factory, and a beautiful park.
We were lucky and had perfect weather, however the tour does operate rain or shine. Just be prepared for the weather, it can be a little chilly on the volcano as it’s on a mountain.

Nice tour of Volcanos... - Nice tour of Volcanos National Park, with great views of the Kilaeua crater. Jill did a great job explaining the history of the island, Hilo and the volcanic activity. A great overview of the area, with a fun stop at the Big Island chocolate shop!

Wonderful excursion - The tour was very enjoyable. There are places where it is moderately physical. However, you have the option of staying in the vehicle. We completed all of the tour. Even if the volcano is not erupting it is an awesome site. Going through the lava tube was a cool experience. The gardens are beautiful and the chocolate factory is expensive but very yummy. The vehicle used was very comfortable.

The terrain is a bit... - The terrain is a bit dicey for those with gait/balance issues. We saw most of the sights from areas near the bus but chose not to climb to the waterfall or volcano top.

Excellent tour of Volcano Nat’l park and a few other points of interest. - This tour focuses on the Volcano Nat’l Park: Not There Are many stops. The Rainbow Waterfall, then up the mountain to the active Kilauea volcano and into the caldera right to the edge of the crater. Chances are, you won’t see any lava, but you might. There was an eruption of lava plume several hundred feet in the air just one week prior and the crater is now full of freshly laid, hot lava rock with deadly gases escaping. You go to steam vents, where you can experience the heat but since it’s steam you aren’t breathing deadly gases. Then to the other side of the rim at Volcano House. Then down the mountain to the chocolate factory, then the gardens. So, lots of stops, 3 are not directly related to the volcano, so there is variety.
Our guide Jill was born and raised in Hilo, so knows lots of history and stories that aren’t in any textbooks. Pleasant, informative, good sense of humor. And obviously cares deeply about Hilo, the island of Hawaii, and the state of Hawaii.
