- Rainbow Falls - On sunny days, rainbows appear in the mist of the 80-foot falls, creating enchanting views. The wide waterfall — nearly 100 feet in diameter — cascades over a natural lava cave into the river below. When it rains, (which is frequent in Hilo), the swollen Wailuku River makes the falls wider, muddier, and louder. On these days, the rainbows for which this spot is named may not be visible, but the sheer volume of water and the accessibility of this location for all ages make it a fun, quick, and easy excursion.
- Saddle Road - Saddle Road, Hawaii, is regarded as one of the most spectacular roads in the world. This 55-mile drive offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Hawaii’s Route 200 traverses all four of its climates – tropical forests, arid desert, lush grasslands, and misty mountaintop fog. Between miles 19 and 23, several areas with lava flows and young vegetation and trees can be seen. Near the road, the thickened lava has left the characteristic mounds of a slowing flow. Just past mile 23, travelers will approach a popular local landmark, Pu`u Huluhulu, an older Mauna Kea cinder cone, or kīpuka, surrounded by younger lava flows. At this point, the road reaches its peak elevation of about 1.25 miles – 6,632 feet. From here, the journey continues through the volcanic aftermath of hundreds of thousands of years of lava activity, leading toward Belt Road, where the descent into Kona or Waikoloa begins.
