- South Point Complex - As the southernmost tip of the Big Island of Hawaii and the entire United States, South Point Complex, also known as Ka Lae, is a National Historic Landmark District. This area is renowned for its powerful ocean currents and winds, and it is home to a wind farm.
The location is a favored fishing destination due to the convergence of ocean currents nearby, which makes it rich in red snapper and ulua.
Adventurous cliff jumpers often take the plunge from the 40-foot high cliffs, with an old fishing ladder available for climbing back up from the ocean.
South Point Complex is archaeologically significant as one of the earliest Hawaiian settlements, believed to be the initial landing site for Polynesians due to its closeness to Tahiti. Visitors can explore the ruins of an ancient Hawaiian temple (heiau), a fishing shrine, and rock ledges with holes drilled for mooring canoes.
- Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - Home to two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park offers visitors breathtaking volcanic landscapes and insights into the traditional Hawaiian culture linked to these natural wonders.
Established on August 1, 1916, the park spans 344,812 acres and attracted 1,620,294 visitors in 2023.
The park features a variety of environments, ranging from sea level to the summit of Mauna Loa, the Earth’s largest active volcano, at 13,679 feet. The park’s climates vary from lush tropical rainforests to the dry and desolate Kaʻū Desert.
Volcanic activity, ground collapses, and explosions in the park halted in early August 2018, with a pause until an eruption on December 20, 2020, at the Halemaʻumaʻu crater. The main entrance to the park is via the Hawaii Belt Road, and the Chain of Craters Road leads to the coast, passing several craters from past eruptions.
Park Entrance Fee is $30.00
- Rainbow Falls - Known in Hawaiian as Waiānuenue Falls, Rainbow Falls is a stunning waterfall located in Hilo, Hawaii. It stands 80 feet (24 meters) tall and nearly 100 feet (30 meters) wide. As part of the Hawai’i State Parks system, it can be visited without an entrance fee.
The falls are fed by the Wailuku River, which cascades into a large, turquoise pool below. The surrounding gorge is lush with dense, nonnative tropical rainforest, enhancing the falls’ allure. The area is notably rich with nonnative wild ginger and monstera plants.
Rainbow Falls derives its name from the beautiful rainbows that often appear in the mist of the waterfall on sunny mornings around 10 am. The falls flow over a natural lava cave, believed to be the mythological home of Hina, an ancient Hawaiian goddess, adding cultural depth to the site’s natural beauty.
- Mauna Kea Observatories - Situated at an elevation of 9,200 feet on Mauna Kea, the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station (VIS) serves as a hub for those visiting the Mauna Kea Observatories and the summit of Mauna Kea.
The VIS provides educational programs, stargazing opportunities, and information about the cultural and natural importance of Mauna Kea. It is a vital stop for tourists and researchers, offering insights into the astronomical research conducted at the observatories and the unique environment of Mauna Kea. The center also plays a key role in promoting safe and respectful visitation practices for one of the world’s leading astronomical observation sites.
The Mauna Kea Observatories, located near the summit, are part of a network of independent astronomical research facilities and large telescope observatories that benefit from Mauna Kea’s clear skies, low humidity, and minimal light pollution.
