Day 1: Cape Town - Hermanus - Southern Most Tip of Africa - Cape Agulhas

Day 1: Cape Town - Hermanus - Southern Most Tip of Africa - Cape Agulhas
Betty’s Bay - Departing from Cape Town, we take the R44, driving along the coastline past beaches. This route offers dramatic coastlines, beaches, fynbos biosphere, baboons, monkeys, birdwatching, and hiking. We pass The Strand and Gordons Bay, with our first stop at Betty’s Bay to see a colony of endangered African penguins.
Hermanus - Continuing from Betty’s Bay, we head towards Hermanus, making brief stops along the way. Hermanus is a top tourist destination in South Africa, renowned for the best whale watching globally. For canoeing enthusiasts, the Kleinrivier vlei, located 6 km outside Hermanus towards Gansbaai, is a prime spot. Other activities include sandboarding, quad biking, and fly fishing. Hermanus also boasts the largest wine shop in South Africa, the Wine Village, offering a vast collection of internationally acclaimed red and white wines.
Agulhas National Park - We drive through Agulhas National Park on our way to the southernmost tip of Africa.
Cape Agulhas - Swellendam - Mossel Bay - George
Swellendam - Leaving Cape Agulhas around 8:00 am, we drive through and stop at Swellendam, South Africa’s third-oldest town. Swellendam features over 50 provincial heritage sites and well-preserved Cape Dutch architecture. The town’s history is tied to the Khoi people, who assisted the Dutch in building trade posts and developing a mercantile industry. We make a brief 45-minute stop to explore.
Mossel Bay - From Swellendam, we travel back along the coast, enjoying beautiful scenery en route to Mossel Bay. We visit Indalu Game Reserve near the N2, where we can view game, including elephants, and enjoy an interactive experience feeding and touching the elephants.
George - Knysna - Plettenberg Bay
Knysna - Starting from George, we head to Knysna, spending part of the morning there. Knysna offers unique shopping opportunities for locally made art and crafts. We stop for lunch as convenient.
Knysna Heads - Located at the edge of the Knysna Lagoon, the ‘Heads’ are two promontories within a National Park, preserving the area’s natural beauty and indigenous forests.
Wilderness National Park - From Knysna, we continue eastwards towards Plettenberg Bay. This stretch offers some of the most stunning views on the Garden Route, including Wilderness National Park and numerous scenic viewpoints.
Outeniqua Pass - We travel over the Outeniqua Mountains from the Little Karoo, continuing until we reach Plettenberg Bay for the night.
Plettenberg Bay - Tsitsikama National Park - Port Elizabeth
Tsitsikamma National Park - Our next stop is Tsitsikamma National Park, where we embark on a game drive in search of the Big 5, including elephants, buffalo, leopards, lions, zebras, rhinos, giraffes, and kudus.
Storms River - At Tsitsikamma, the Stormsriver Mouth rest camp offers scenic views and is a must-visit. Short hiking trails (2-6 km) allow exploration of the coastal bush and rocky shoreline. The area features magnificent scenery, a small beach, a restaurant, and a shop. We stop for lunch as convenient.
Storms River Suspension Bridge - The famous Storms River Suspension Bridge spans the river mouth, offering a popular walk/hike to the bridge. We then travel to The Bloukrans Bridge, 216 meters above the Bloukrans River, home to the world’s highest commercial bungee jump.
Port Elizabeth - East London - Cintsa
Gqeberha - We start by touring Port Elizabeth, exploring its world-class beaches and other attractions.
East London - Our tour continues to East London, the capital of the Sunshine Coast. Art, culture, and architecture enthusiasts will enjoy visiting Fort Glamorgan, built in 1848 to protect the supply line to King Williams Town. We also explore Xhosa culture and cuisine at Khaya la Bantu Cultural Village and visit the 19m tall Hood Point Lighthouse.
Cintsa - Mazeppa Bay - Coffee Bay - Port Saint Johns
Wild Coast - From Coffee Bay, we journey to Port St. Johns, where we spend the night. Known as the ‘jewel of the Wild Coast,’ Port St. Johns offers incredible experiences, including three beaches perfect for walks, games, and sunbathing. The area also features numerous hiking trails, and local tour guides provide insights into Xhosa culture and customs.
Port Saint Johns - Port Edward - Durban
Wild Coast - Continuing our Wild Coast tour, we depart from Port St. Johns towards Port Edward, passing through rural villages and larger towns like Lusisiki, Flagstaff, and Bizana. This drive offers beautiful scenery.
Port Edward - Port Edward features attractions such as the Red Desert and the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve.
Port Shepstone - From Port Edward, we head to our final destination, passing through popular beach resorts on the R61 road, including South Broom, Uvongo, Shelley Beach, Port Shepstone, Ifafa, Scottburgh, Umkomaas, and Amanzimtoti, before reaching Durban.
