Highlights
  • Strandgaten - We stroll down Strandgaten, the historic main street for the Norwegian merchants. But we won’t just walk down here - we’ll veer off-the-beaten path for some unique views of Bergen.
  • Nykirken - We stop outside Nykirken, the church built for the merchants in the 17th century. Edvard Grieg was baptised here. But we’ll also discuss the Archbishops Residence that used to be there.
  • Nordnes Sjobad - After taking some secret streets in Nordnes (you’ll have to take the tour to learn about them!), we end up at the halfway point, the Nordnes Park.
  • USF Arts Center (Verftet) - As we make our way back to the city, we enter one of the best-preserved neighbourhoods in Bergen. Here we’ll see the culture house and surrounds.
  • Knøsesmauet - We stop outside what has been voted the most beautiful street in Bergen.
  • Nøstegaten - For the last part of the tour, we head into the well-preserved sailors neighbourhood of Nostet.
  • Den Nationale Scene - Heading back into the city, we pass by Bergen’s theatre.
  • Ole Bull Fountain - We finish in the city centre of Bergen.

Additional Information

Looking for a unique walking tour in Bergen that takes you away from the busy crowded areas of Bryggen and the fish market? Discover one of the best-kept secrets in the city with this walking tour of the Nordnes peninsula.

Nordnes is a 1km (0.6 mile) long peninsula that stretches into Bergen harbour. While the Hanseatic League were dominating trade on Bryggen, Nordnes is where the Norwegian merchants developed their businesses. But Nordnes was also the centre of power in Bergen, and it was the city’s courthouse and execution site for hundreds of years. It’s also where witches were burned in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the 19th century, it became a hub of sailors and red-light district, with the narrow, dark alleys the perfect place to hide undercover activity. Today it is a popular (and expensive) neighbourhood with families, schools, and beautiful parks.

We limit the group size as this tour is through a residential neighbourhood. You ask as many questions as you want!

A great introduction to Bergen - We had a wonderful time on the tour of Nordnes with Magda. The tour had the perfect mix of historical information, current culture, and interesting buildings. The Nordnes area is beautiful and it was really nice to get away from the crowds that tend to go to other areas of Bergen. We highly recommend this tour!

Beautiful historical stroll - Wonderful tour & guide. I especially love that it wasn’t raining, which is rare. The history of feminism and “witches” was extra interesting to me.

History of Bergen - Thanks to our guide Janine. She made the city come alive, improved our history and highlighted the importance of Bergen through the ages. Took us to places off the beaten track, yet only 10 minutes walk from the centre. Advised of other things to see and restaurants/cafes to go to. Thoroughly enjoyed this tour by a lovely Australian lady who has obviously taken Norway to her heart.

Bergen Nordnes Walk Review - The guides were very knowledgeable and personable. Were very welcoming and pointed out great spots for both the history of Bergen, the neighborhood, and plenty of photo opportunities. Definitely a great tour and would recommend to all visiting Bergen. Our guides were Janine and Magda and both excellent!
