The journey begins at Rifugio Sapienza (1,900 m) with a cable car ascent to 2,500 m, followed by a 4x4 transfer to 2,850 m. From this point, a 2-hour hike takes participants through recent lava flows and volcanic ash to the summit craters at 3,340 m.
Participants will walk along the crater rim to view “La Voragine” and “Bocca Nuova,” then proceed to the Southeast Crater, which has been the most active in recent years. After taking in the breathtaking views, the descent down sandy slopes to 3,000 m allows for a lunch break.
The trek continues past the 2002/2003 Barbagallo Craters, through a lava flow canyon, and to a scenic viewpoint over the Valle del Bove—an ancient caldera. After a final segment past the 2001 lateral crater, participants will return to the starting point via cable car.
