- Danube River - Discover the majestic natural wonder, the magnificent Danube River.
The Danube has historically served as both a unifying and dividing line for nations and countries. Our nation is fortunate to be one of the ten through which this, Europe’s second-longest river, flows.
Once the primary link between the East and the West, the boundary of the mighty Roman Empire has retained its significance and today continues to connect the far reaches of the Old Continent. This remarkable river, affectionately known as the “old giant,” has been the birthplace of numerous civilizations and cultures, with various sites along the Serbian banks providing evidence of this rich history.
- Golubac Fortress - As you follow the path of the blue giant, the first sight is the Golubac Fortress.
Perched on inaccessible cliffs near the Danube’s widest point, this medieval stronghold greets you with its enchanting towers, each telling tales reminiscent of a true fairytale. Ascending one of the towers, you’ll understand why locals say the Danube resembles the sea from this vantage point.
Standing on one of Serbia’s best-preserved fortresses, you will have the chance to enjoy an almost “aerial” view of the Danube and its mirror-like surface.
- Kapetan Misin breg - As a reward for your patience in this “history class,” visit the Eco-ethno household “Kapetan Mišin breg,” where you can relish breathtaking views over the Djerdap gorge.
Named after a highly esteemed captain, the complex features an open-air gallery called “Man, wood, water,” showcasing a collection of wooden and stone sculptures.
Take a deep breath, engage in friendly conversation with the hosts, and gaze into the distance as you bid farewell to the Mighty.
We sincerely hope that the stories linked to the events and sites of the Danube, as “witnesses” of various epochs, will provide you with another piece to complete the Serbia puzzle.
- Djerdap National Park - After a lunch break, embark on a cruise through the narrowest and deepest section of the Iron Gate Gorge. In the most picturesque part of the gorge, you will see the face of the Dacian king Decebal carved into a massive rock and the Mraconia Monastery on the Romanian side of the Danube. At the cruise’s conclusion, visit the site where Roman Emperor Trajan left a lasting mark on the rock, known as Tabula Traiana, a testament to one of the most challenging projects - constructing a road through the most impassable part of the gorge. After the cruise, return to Belgrade.
