- Yangmingshan National Park - Begin your journey by meeting your tour guide at MRT Zhongxiao Xinsheng Station, then proceed to Yangmingshan National Park.
Yangmingshan National Park is situated in the northern part of Taipei City, covering Beitou District and six other districts within the Taipei Metro Area. As the world’s first Urban Quiet Park certified by Quiet Park International, the park is celebrated for its stunning flora and rich geological features, including fumaroles, lava terrains, craters, and hot springs, providing an up-close experience of the rocks and landforms.
- Yang Ming Shan Qing Tian Gang - The initial stop is Qingtiangang, a vast lava terrace formed by lava flowing northward after an eruption. This terrace was once a ranch for grazing water buffaloes during Japanese colonization; even today, naturally bred water buffaloes can still be seen.
- Yang Ming Shan Leng Shui Keng - The next stop is Lengshuikeng (meaning “cold water pit”), a barrier lake created by volcanic lava flowing down the mountain. The hot spring water here is cooler than in other areas (around 40 degrees Celsius), hence the name. Enjoy a refreshing hot spring foot bath to ease tension and stiffness in your legs.
- Xiaoyoukeng Recreation Area - Following that, visit the most popular attraction in Yangmingshan National Park — Xiaoyoukeng (meaning “little oil pit”), a post-volcanic geological landscape area.
The scenic trail around Xiaoyoukeng offers close-up views of the pit from various angles, where you can observe and smell the steam escaping from the cracks, and see the sulfur crystals around the fumaroles, as if feeling the breath of a dormant volcano.
- Zhuzihu - Known for Yangmingshan’s calla lily and hydrangea, Zhuzihu is a farming area nestled in the mountains. Originally a lava-dammed lake formed by volcanic eruptions, the geological conditions and fertile soil make Zhuzihu ideal for farming.
In addition to the seasonal flowers, Zhuzihu is renowned for its mountain vegetable cuisine. While in Zhuzihu, be sure to try the local specialties.
- Beitou Thermal Valley (Hell Valley) - Geothermal Valley, the next stop on your Yangmingshan day trip, is located near the Beitou Hot Spring Museum.
This area is also referred to as “Hell Valley” or “Ghost Lake” due to the sulfuric steam fog it emits from the high temperature. It is one of the heat sources for the sulfur springs that supply the nearby hot springs.
- Beitou Hot Spring Museum - The subsequent stop on your Yangmingshan tour is the Beitou Hot Spring Museum, constructed during the Japanese colonization.
The museum’s two-story Tudor-style building features a brick and wood façade, and a black tile roof. The first floor includes a small bath and a large bath, where you can view the baths up close as you walk along the arcade. Additionally, the display of “sento” replicates the facilities of a traditional public bath, offering insight into how communal bathhouses operated in the past.
The second floor houses a large Tatami lobby and a balcony with a special exhibition area displaying early Taiwanese film documents. This is an excellent place to learn about Beitou’s rich hot spring culture and history.
- Beitou Public Library, Taipei - The final stop is the Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch, also known as Beitou Library. Situated in Beitou Park and near the Beitou Hot Spring Museum, this beautiful library was selected by the renowned travel website “When on Earth” as one of the 10 Coolest Examples of green buildings due to its sustainable design. The New York City–based online culture magazine “Flavorwire” also recognized it as one of The 25 Most Beautiful Public Libraries in the World.
The distinctive appearance of Beitou Library also makes it a popular spot for photography. So, take out your phone or camera, capture the view, and make your travel memories tangible.
- Shilin Night Market - After your tour of Beitou District and Yangmingshan National Park, you may choose to disembark at Shilin Night Market, regarded as Taiwan’s most famous night market. There, you can indulge in delicious street foods to your heart’s content. Alternatively, you may choose to disembark at MRT Zhongxiao Xinsheng Station after the tour.
