Liyuan Theater is a collaborative venture between the Beijing Qianmen Hotel and the Peking Opera Theatre, showcasing a diverse array of Peking Opera performances. Occasionally, audience members have the unique opportunity to visit the make-up room and observe the actors as they apply their intricate costume make-up. Language barriers are minimal, as the performances primarily rely on gestures and martial arts skills.

Peking Opera, known as Jing Ju in Chinese, is a traditional Chinese opera form that integrates singing, music, performance, dance, and martial arts. This art form was shaped by local dialects and the artistic styles of other regional operas, especially in terms of singing. It originated in the late 18th century and reached full development and recognition by the mid-19th century. Peking Opera was immensely popular in the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) court and is now considered one of China’s cultural treasures.
