Highlights
  • Beauly Priory - Beauly Priory is currently closed due to recent high winds causing masonry to fall, and the reopening date is yet to be determined. However, we will still visit Beauly, where you can view the Priory from the gate.

Beauly Priory was established in the 13th Century as a monastery for the Valliscaulian order of monks from Dijon, France. Oliver Cromwell’s forces destroyed the Priory in the 16th Century. For centuries, it served as a burial site for the chiefs of Clan Fraser and Mackenzie and their families. There is an Outlander connection here, as it is where Claire met the Seer.

  • Urquhart Castle - Urquhart Castle is situated on a promontory extending into Loch Ness and has been the site of numerous battles over the years. The views of Loch Ness from the castle are stunning. During your visit, you can explore the ruins of this 1000-year-old castle and walk down to the water’s edge of Loch Ness. Keep an eye out for Nessie!
  • Culloden Battlefield - The Battle of Culloden in 1746 was the last battle fought on British soil. Visit the museum and walk around the main areas of the battlefield where the heaviest fighting occurred. You will see the memorial cairn, the Well of the Dead, the clan gravestones, and Leanach Cottage. This visit is a must for Outlander fans.
  • Clava Cairns - We will visit Clava Cairns, where you can enter two of the three cairns. This 4000-year-old Bronze Age cemetery inspired Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. You will see the cleft stone and the stone circles around the cairns.
  • Inverness Castle - The current Inverness Castle is the third castle on this site and dates back to 1836. The first castle was built here in 1057 and stood until 1307. The castle was rebuilt in 1548 and destroyed during the Jacobite uprisings. In the castle grounds, you will see the statue of Flora MacDonald, famous for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape over the sea to Skye.
  • Leakey’s Second-hand Bookshop - One of the oldest streets in Inverness is Church Street, and the first place we see is Leakey’s Bookshop. This building served as a government hospital after the Battle of Culloden.
  • Old High St Stephen’s Church - Behind Leakey’s Bookshop stands the Old High Church/St. Stephen’s, where Jacobite prisoners were taken after the Battle of Culloden. You can still see the musket holes in the church wall where the Jacobite prisoners were executed. From the graveyard, you can see Balnain House, which was also a government hospital after Culloden, and St. Mary’s Church, which has Outlander connections.
  • Abertarff House - Further up Church Street, we pass Abertarff House, the oldest house in Inverness, which once served as the town house for the Fraser chiefs.
  • Cawdor Castle - Cawdor Castle reopens on April 27, 2024. With its Macbeth connections, Cawdor Castle is one of the few castles in the Highland area unaffected by the Jacobite uprisings. Home to the Thanes of Cawdor for centuries, you can tour the castle, visit the magnificent gardens, and meet the Dowager Countess of Cawdor, who still resides in the castle.

A perfect day in the Highlands - Our guide , Billy, was wonderful. He was kind, funny and full of information. We could not have asked for a better guide. We had a private tour (there were 4 of us) and he took us to big stops like Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle and to small, not as well known local spots. He made sure we saw everything we wanted to see and got us back to our ship in plenty of time. Please do not hesitate to book this trip. It was an incredible day.

A terrific tour with an outstanding tour guide! - Our driver/tour guide, Billy, was so informative and easy to understand. He was also very flexible and accommodated our desires and schedule 100%. We saw things that we would never have seen on the equivalent Viking tour! And the cost per person was much less than the Viking alternative that was sold out on day one. This was a completely satisfactory option and I would recommend it highly.

Beautiful tour, great guide. - Kevin was wonderful guide. He took us to some beautiful of the beaten track places with breathtaking views. He is also a fountain of information and little stories that bring the Highland experience to life. The weather was cloudy which gave the whole landscape even more character. Lastly, the van was very comfortable and Kevin is a great, relaxed driver.

Lawrence and Billy were fantastic tour guides - April 30, 2024: This was our first visit to Scotland, and our adventure started in Inverness with me, wife Kathy, and sisters-in-law Chris and Judy. Lawrence greeted us at the Inverness airport after a 10-hour flight from Phoenix, AZ. We hit the ground running with little sleep on the plane. Lawrence had a nice Mercedes van which was extremely comfortable and luxurious. Before we checked into our hotel, we first visited the Balnuaran of Clava. There we walked among the cairns which were built 4,000 years ago by local farmers to bury their dead. Lawrence was deeply knowledgeable of this spot and gave us a guided tour of Cairns and all its history. He shared interesting trivia about the tall thin slab of stone. It was the inspiration of Diana Gabaldon who wrote the Outlander novels. The slab here was where Claire Randall time traveled to 18th century Scotland. Next, Lawrence took us to Battle of Culloden, (Culloden, Scotland) where the Jacobite army was outnumbered and defeated by the British army in 1746. Only 50 Brittish soldiers were killed compared to 1,500 Jacobite's killed. It was a beautiful day to be outside visiting these two historical sites. Lawrence then dropped us off at Kingsmill Hotel which was a beautiful and comfortable hotel. Day 2, we had Billy, Lawrence’s brother, as our tour guide. He was fantastic. Because the women blew their curling irons (curling tongs as they are called in Scotland) Billy searched online and called multiple stores to see if they had replacements. He finally found 2 which he ordered online at Argos, and we picked them up before heading out for the day. Billy really went above and beyond for a tour guide. I am sure he will not have an experience like this again too soon. We spent the day visiting some beautiful churches in Inverness, visiting, and feeding the highland cows Katie and Jamie at the Robertsons Farm, Dunrobin Castle, and Dornoch Cathedral. Day 3, Billy was driving us to Edinburgh, and once again it was a beautiful day. We left our Kingsmill Hotel for the last time and had a full day of driving and sightseeing to look forward to. We visited Invergarry Castle, Urquhart Castle, Fort Augustus on Loch Ness, Bridge of Oich, and watched the boats being transported through the Fort Augustus Locks. We also visited the Well of The Seven Heads Monument in Invergarry. Continuing to Edinburgh, we stopped at the Commando Memorial, which was a memorial for the Commandos who gave their lives during WWII. Next, we stopped at the visitor center at Ballachulish, Glencoe where we viewed the beautiful mountains including “Three Sisters.” It was a short visit due to an unexpected power outage. It was still a beautiful visitor center, and the mountains were beautiful. Along the drive, Billy shared with us some classic Scottish music, “Caledonia,” “Come by the Hills,” “Nae Union,” and many others. The music really complimented the scenery. Our brief and last stop before arriving in Edenborough was the Falls of Dochart in Killin. Billy safely delivered us to the Virgin Hotel, which was our home in Edinburgh for the next three days. We all highly recommend Lawrence and Billy as private tour guides. They were so friendly and accommodating. They did not rush us at any time while we were in their hands. Sometimes we modified our tour on the fly depending on what we were interested in seeing. If we could give Lawrence and Billy more than a five-star rating, we would.

Marvelous tour around Inverness - This tour was amazing! Don’t hesitate. The guides made the day. They were relaxed, we didn’t feel stressed, they kept our large group of 20 engaged, shared lots of history, stopped us by a local farm to see the highland cows, took us to Stimpson’s for lunch (ask them about this locals spot), provided our group with yummy snacks and water, and made the day unforgettable. We are still talking about what a perfect day we had in Inverness. Thank you Billie and team from Highlander Private Tours. Best tour company we’ve ever worked with.

Great day, great guide!!! - We had a wonderful day. Billy picked us up promptly and was a great guide. He listened to our priorities and was willing to accommodate our interests and requests. He shared interesting information using his charming personality and wit. Moreover, he took care of us all along the way, making sure that we were getting the best experiences. Kudos for having a sound system in the car that allowed everyone in the vehicle to hear what he was saying. Billy truly helped our group of eight become enchanted with the Highlands.

Interesting Inverness Tour - We spent a wonderful day with Lawrence Maclean as our tour guide through Inverness, Urguardt Castle, Loch Ness, Culloden Battlefield , we feed Highland Coos, saw the Clava Cairns & Standing Stones and saw the locks at the Caledonian Canals. As a surprise Lawrence took us to three different burial sites, he had researched before we arrived, where we found ancestors graves and he took us to a sheep dog demonstration by a local farmer. Lawrence went out of his way to accommodate all of our wants and needs, even taking us to shop for legit clan items and purchase food for our early morning train ride. We would highly recommend Lawrence to anyone looking for an inclusive tour of the Highlands and the surrounding areas.
