Additional Information

PLEASE NOTE THAT START TIMES FOR EACH WALK ARE DIFFERENT DUE TO THE TIDES, AND NOT AT 02:30am (as mentioned by tripadvisor)

The route across the sands at low tide is atmospheric, evoking the time of Saxon Kings and Celtic Priests. We are likely to see and hear Grey seals as they bask on the sands. You will hear stories dating back to Roman times and can begin to imagine early pilgrims making the crossing to pay their respects to St Aidan and St Cuthbert. Holy Island is a special place and the best way to approach it is across the sands - walking barefoot if you want to get the most from your experience!

The walk is one-way to the island, returning to the start point in my vehicle after we have spent some free time on Holy Island.

Location
Barn at Beal Restaurant & Campsite

Amazing experience and great guide! Highly recommend! - Highly recommend this amazing experience with a perfect guide! Ray provides a lot of history and good conversation throughout the walk - his expertise and friendliness make the crossing extra special! We were blessed with a beautiful sunset although some strong winds did make the crossing a little harder. Otherwise it is a beautiful and rather easy walk, with a perfect reward at the end - a lovely pint at the pub!

Lovely walk - Actually did the walk last year but hadn't reviewed till now. Loved the whole experience, walking with my youngest son, and will certainly do it again. Definitely needs to be done barefooted and, overall, pretty easy going - standing on shells does make you wince a bit !

Great Bare Foot walk with History Snippets - Unusual bare foot walk with History Snippets...walk stats from Beals Cafe which has amazing views and great coffee. A cinder track leads to start of walk which involves some water pools. The group was small and Ray provided history along the route which walked in bare feet and takes approx 2 hours following the Pilgrims route. On Lindisfarne there is enough time for refreshments and to explore before being returned to the cafe by car. A great unusual experience with a great guide.

Fabulous experience- so glad we did it! - Fabulous bare feet walk across the sandy track with a friendly group of 6 plus Jack the dog! Ray led us safely and at a steady pace whilst regaling us with the history of Northumbrian rulers and Holy Island. Lucky with the weather and the sound of the seals was great encouragement! We’re in our 70s and found it no trouble so don’t be worried, sign up! Ray’s return journey in his car made the trip the best of both worlds! Highly recommend.

A windy, atmospheric walk with a perfect guide - We had a great walk with Ray across the sands. He is a brilliant tour guide, the stories of Kings and Saints really added to the trip. We loved walking barefoot across the causeway, even in the slightly chilly weather! Thank you so much.

The pilgrims walk to Holy Island - The walk across the sands was amazing although it was a very windy day. Ray is a natural story teller and his interest in Northumbria’s history showed as he was so informative and amusing. It was a great day out and a real experience. A high light of our holiday .

Great trip, Ray our guide, was terrific!! - Ray our guide was great with interesting facts delivered during the walk. It was cold, windy and a bit damp on our crossing but we had a blast even with our bare Floridian feet not used to water quite that cool!!!
