• Timothy Hill - For a stunning view of St. Kitts and the nearby island of Nevis, make your way to the top of Timothy Hill. This popular lookout offers a breathtaking panorama where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea at the island’s southeast peninsula. In the distance, you can also see the sister island, Nevis. Below, Friar’s Bay and Frigate Bay are visible, with lush, gently sloping hills cascading into the water.
• Independence Square - Formerly known as Pall Mall Square, Independence Square was renamed on September 19, 1983, when St. Kitts and Nevis gained independence. It is situated on the eastern side of Basseterre, adjacent to Newtown. The square’s design resembles a Union Jack, and the surrounding streets and houses once dated back to the mid-eighteenth century. Unfortunately, many have been lost to time and environmental damage. Some, like the Court House and Public Library, were destroyed by fire and have been rebuilt.
• St. George’s Anglican Church - St. George’s Anglican Church, the largest church in St. Kitts, also serves as the site of a significant religious conflict. Its history is tumultuous, reflecting the island’s early life and the prolonged battles for dominance that shaped it.
• Immaculate Conception Co-Cathedral Catholic Church - The Co-Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is an ornate church made of grey stone, located on the eastern side of Independence Square. During the early French occupation of St. Kitts, the Jesuits built a Roman Catholic Church dedicated to Our Lady. Notre Dame was burned in 1706 during the Anglo-French war and later rebuilt as St. George’s Anglican Church. The Catholic congregation in St. Kitts significantly declined after the Treaty of Utrecht. In 1713, the English prohibited public worship of the Catholic faith in St. Kitts. Wealthy Catholic families constructed cupolas on their homes as a signal for other Catholics to gather for worship. Only two such buildings remain in Basseterre, both on Liverpool Row.
• Berkeley Memorial - Erected in 1883, the Berkeley Memorial was for a long time the only public monument honoring an individual in St. Kitts. It was dedicated to Thomas Berkeley Hardtman Berkeley, a legislator and owner of several estates, including Fountain, Greenland, Greenhill, Ottleys, Shadwell, and Stone Fort.
• Frigate Bay - Frigate Bay Beach (South) faces the Caribbean Sea, where the water is calm and warm. The beach is adorned with beautiful shells, providing great delight for children.
