- Port Olimpic - Located opposite the Vila Olímpica neighborhood, Port Olimpic was constructed in 1990 during the redevelopment of this area in Barcelona. The marina was designed by architects Oriol Bohigas, Josep Martorell, David Mackay, and Albert Puigdomènech. The city required a sports marina that met high standards, and it served as the venue for the sailing competitions during the 1992 Olympic Games. The marina features 756 berths for yachts, and its entrance is visible from anywhere in Barcelona.
The two skyscrapers flanking the marina are the Mapfre Tower and the Hotel Arts, with Frank Gehry’s stunning goldfish sculpture at its base, and nearby, the Gran Casino de Barcelona. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy yachting or practice various sailing techniques here, and during the summer, the beaches on either side of the marina – Somorrostro and Nova Icària – are ideal for sunbathing or taking a refreshing dip in the sea.
- Gold Fish Sculpture (Escultura el Peix d’Or) - The Fish sculpture by architect Frank Gehry, a Pritzker Prize winner in 1989, has become a symbol of post-Olympic Barcelona, appearing to float on the Mediterranean waters. Sunlight reflects off the scales of this sculpture, which presides over the waterfront of the Olympic Marina and Barcelona’s beaches.
In 1992, Olympic Barcelona was transforming its seafront. A new Olympic Marina was emerging, dominated by its twin towers. On one side stood the Mapfre Tower; on the other, the Hotel Arts. Frank Gehry placed his fish sculpture at the foot of the hotel. The sculpture is 56 meters long and 35 meters high, seemingly eager to leap into the blue waters of the Mediterranean.
- Port Vell (Old Port) - Port Vell, meaning “Old Harbor” in English, is a waterfront harbor in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, and part of the Port of Barcelona. It was developed as part of an urban renewal initiative before the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Previously, it was a neglected area of empty warehouses, railroad yards, and factories. The complex now attracts 16 million visitors annually.
Today, it is a central point of the city and a tourist attraction, featuring the Maremàgnum (a mall with shops, a multiplex cinema, bars, and restaurants), IMAX Port Vell, and Europe’s largest aquarium, housing 8,000 fish and 11 sharks in 22 tanks filled with six million liters (1.6 million US gallons) of seawater. A pedestrian walkway, Rambla de Mar, connects La Rambla to Port Vell and includes a swing bridge to allow ships to enter and exit the harbor.
- Mediterranean - The Mediterranean Sea is one of the world’s most culturally significant bodies of water and has been a home and primary food source for millions of people for centuries. Due to its location between Africa, Asia, and Europe, it serves as a major trade route. The water is beautifully blue, making it perfect for capturing stunning photos!
