Highlights
  • Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya - MNAC - Permanent collection of the National Art Museum of Catalonia:

Make your way to the National Art Museum in the beautiful National Palace on Montjuic Hill. Redeem your voucher at the ticket office and head inside to enjoy the art independently.

Opened in 1934, the museum houses a vast collection of Catalan, Spanish and European art that spans a period of roughly 1,000 years. The gallery includes works by Titian, Gainsborough and modernist masters such as Gaudí, too. Perhaps start with the museum’s most famous treasures: its Romanesque frescoes. View the vivid artworks, many of which are displayed in recreated church interiors. Don’t miss the eye-catching 12th-century Christ in Majesty that depicts a luminous Christ sitting on a rainbow. Explore the stunning Renaissance and baroque collections of paintings and sculptures from Europe between the 1400s and 1900s, with masterpieces by Canaletto, Titian and Goya. Another highlight is the Modern Art section, home to paintings, sculptures, posters and other art nouveau works by 19th- and 20th-century Catalan artists. The showpiece is a collection of Gaudí furniture that includes sinuous wood chairs and doors.

How long you stay in the museum is up to you, but many people find that three hours is sufficient.

Amazing View of the City and Incredible Art - I really enjoyed this museum! There was so much to see, I didn't get to all of it, so I would give yourself at least 2 hours...more if you really enjoy art! There is a wide variety of art to see - from romanesque to modern. There is a wonderful cafe as well...I enjoyed an aperol spritz before heading to the gift shop. The view of the city from the museum is wonderful as well!

Art and a view in the sky! - Enjoyable visit either solo or with friends and family. Outside and inside cafe dining available. There are a few accessible accommodation issues - so come prepared to walk and climb stairs. However the art and ambiance is well worth it!

Overall easy booking - Easy to book, easy to acquire the tickets, and easy to go thru the museum. For visitors, the only problem was getting a taxi after the visit. Need to walk down a leave number of stairs and then walk another 5 minutes to get closer to a street to get a taxi.

Should be in the top 5 of attractions to see - We did this on the day we arrived from a long flight and wanted something to help keep us awake and moving. The Museum was so much more interesting than we anticipated, we stayed much longer than we had planned. So much history of the City of which we were unaware. Worth several hours by far.

Breathtaking Art! - Fantastic experience, so much wonderful art! There are several areas with many great paintings and also medieval murals in the religious art section. Highly recommended! I came late in the day so there was no wait. Also in the evening it was a awesome place to hang out and listen to the live music.

Excellent art museum - The views of Barcelona from here are amazing. You don't even have to go into the museum to enjoy it. But I would recommend visiting the museum, it is in a great building and it is very large. It has mainly four sections, Romanic, classic art, modern art and special exhibits. I don’t think you can see it all in one day, we were there for three hours and saw about 30%. But the museum has a nice restaurant with wonderful views so you can take a lunch break and spend the day. There is also a casual Cafe outside the museum. Getting there is fairly easy from Plaza de España, if you don't mind an uphill climb through a nice park, or you can take the number 55 bus that leaves you very close to the main entrance.

Interesting but not exceptional - We enjoyed the visit, but lacked information related to the history of Catalonia versus the art presented. I would also like to see more statues. However, they have the paintings on walls that are particular to their museum.
