Barcelona in the Eyes of an Artist - Miguel met us early on Sunday morning in front of the cathedral. His knowledge of the history, culture, and architecture of Barcelona was very apparent. We began the walking tour of the old Jewish ghetto, saw a modern building with art on the outside by Picasso, was told which seemingly old structures were actually replicas made for the tourists, and had identified the many buildings by Gaudi. We boarded a bus to go up the hill to Park Guell. What a sight! Benches that were beautifully tiled surrounded the huge outside area that overlooked the city. The benches were actually part of the original water system. One could go under the outside area and see this was all being supported by ornate tree trunk sculptures where weekly markets used to be held. And to think this was all built over a hundred years ago. A housing development that never was has turned into a city treasure. Our next stop was back to downtown where we could partake in our own lunch before our visit to Sagrada Familia. The size of the unfinished church was astounding and the colors of the stained glass windows were magnificent. We quietly walked around the church seeing how it was designed for the different positions of the sun lighting the interior with color. I was intrigued by the many sculptures ranging from the small flowers seeming to grow up a wall to the Holy Family above the entrance. Barcelona was a full day of history and art appreciation!

Great tour for Barcelona's most significant sights - This was a great overview of Barcelona. This was our first trip to Barcelona and our guide - Charles (I think that is correct - his Catalan name was difficult to pronounce). He took on on an informative tour of the Gothic Quarter, the La Boqueria Market and Las Ramblas. We did not have an audio system to hear the guide - but the relatively small group made it pretty easy to hear him talk. We got on a small bus to travel to Park Guell - Charles guided us through portions of the park and pointed out many unique features of its design by Gaudi. We boarded the bus and drove to near the La Sagrada Familia church - where we had almost an hour of free time for lunch on our own. Charles gave us a good recommendation for a tapas restaurant. We rejoined the group and then Charles walked us around the La Sagrada Familia and then inside the church. At this point, he secured radios for us to hear him talk as we went through the church. He provided a thorough explanation about the history of the church and its ongoing construction. This was an excellent tour and Charles was an excellent guide - I would recommend this tour to anyone looking for a tour covering what I think are some of the most significant sights in Barcelona.

Disappointed by Lack of Flexibility - Unfortunately, we overslept and missed the start of our scheduled tour. When we contacted the tour operator to ask if we could meet up with the group two hours later, we were told flatly, “No, it is not allowed.” There was no effort to accommodate us or explore options for rejoining the tour, which was disappointing and showed little flexibility or customer care. In contrast, the following day we had a tour to Girona and Costa Brava with a different company. Two travelers in that group also missed the bus departure—but the experience couldn’t have been more different. The tour operator and guide coordinated with them, and the travelers took a train from Barcelona to Girona, where the driver picked them up at the station. That’s what I call thoughtful and proactive customer service. It’s unfortunate that the first company chose not to show the same level of understanding or effort.
