Moshi to Machame Camp

Machame Camp - Elevation: 5,380 ft to 9,350 ft. The journey begins with a drive from the Moshi Hotel to the Machame Gate, passing through the village of Machame situated on the mountain’s lower slopes. Upon leaving the park gate, the trail winds through a lush rainforest, ascending a ridge until reaching Machame Camp.

Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Shira Camp - Elevation: 9,350 ft to 12,500 ft. The path continues from the rainforest glades, ascending a steep, rocky ridge. On the Shira Plateau, the trail traverses heather and open moorlands, crossing a significant river gorge to arrive at Shira 2 Camp.

Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower

Mount Kilimanjaro National Park - Elevation: 12,500 ft to 15,190 ft. The route heads east up a ridge, then southeast towards the Lava Tower, a 300 ft volcanic rock formation. The descent to Barranco Camp passes through the unique and beautiful Senecio Forest, reaching an altitude of 13,000 ft. Although the day starts and ends at the same elevation, time spent at higher altitudes aids acclimatization.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Karanga Camp - The day starts with a descent into a ravine at the base of the Great Barranco Wall, followed by a climb up the nearly 900 ft non-technical but steep cliff. From the top, the trail crosses hills and valleys before a sharp descent into Karanga Valley. A final steep ascent leads to Karanga Camp, designed as a shorter day for acclimatization.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Barafu Camp - Departing Karanga, the trail reaches a junction connecting with the Mweka Trail, continuing up a rocky section to Barafu Hut. Completing the Southern Circuit here provides diverse summit views. The camp offers rest and an early dinner in preparation for the summit day, with views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

The Machame Route, also known as the ‘Whiskey route’, is more appealing to the adventurous trekker, offering them majestic scenery unlike the Marangu route. From awe-inspiring sunsets at Shira to the mystical views of Kibo at the grand Barranco Wall, the Machame route provides a remarkable 6-day visual treat for the adventurous trekker. Usually, the Machame route journey is completed in a minimum of 6 days.

Another advantage of this route is that it gives you the most important element for mountain climbing - time for acclimatisation. The path takes you to a high altitude at Lava Tower (4630m) on the third day and then descends by nearly 700m for an overnight stay at the Barranco camp (3950m). This high elevation and subsequent descent is the key to successful acclimatization.
