Machame Gate (1,800m/5,905ft) to Machame Camp (3,000m/9,840ft)

Machame Gate - Mount Kilimanjaro - After Breakfast, leave from Moshi to Machame Gate, where you will meet our porters and cooks who will spend the next seven days trekking with you to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. Once you arrive at the gate you will have a chance to prepare and double check your trekking gears, while the staff and guides doing some registration.

Your first day’s destination will be at Machame Camp. Each day porters and cooks will walk ahead to set up the camp in time for your arrival. On the first day you will hike through the moss-covered trees of Kilimanjaro’s cloud forest. The forest will thin at the end of the hike and vegetation will change to include heathers, tall grasses and wildflowers. If the weather is clear, you can see the surrounding area and your ultimate destination Kibo Peak.

The Machame route, which takes a seven-day journey, leads to Kilimanjaro through the forest and the moorland from the south-west direction, connecting the Shira route before it sweeps beneath Kibo’s southern ice fields. The beauty of the rainforest is overwhelming and a sense of ‘wilderness’ is palpably experienced as higher altitudes are attained. The sights of Mt. Meru emerging from the clouds are indeed breathtaking and our ultimate ascent to the pinnacle is made through the breathtaking Barafu route. The seven-day schedule allows for optimal acclimatization and also ample time to savor the spectacular views.
