Highlights
  • Banos de la Encima Castle - The impressive silhouette of the castle of Bury al-Hamma dominates the rural landscape of the town of Baños de la Encina, flanked by a robust and crenellated wall with fourteen towers, plus a fifteenth or Christian Tower of Tribute, the castle has hardly suffered damage, constituting, therefore, the best preserved fortified complex of the Almohad era, while being one of the best preserved Muslim castles in all of Spain.

Already in the Copper Age (prehistory), the first vestiges of occupation of the site of the Castillo de Baños appear, in its interior, strong Iberian walls and a funerary mausoleum of a sacred character, give way to an Almohad urban complex (12th century), In addition to a double “water ark” or cistern.

The construction of the castle was as simple as it was durable, the walls rise from a tapial with a high proportion of lime, earth, Chinese river and water. 15 square towers form this colossus with a peculiar oval shape adapting its construction to the flush Cerro del Cueto.

After the excavations carried out, the Muslim presence from the emiral period can be verified, being the Castle, along with others nearby, rigid control of the Sierra Morena passages and the Guadiel depression during the 12th century.

It became definitely Castilian after the take in 1225 by Fernando III, adding the alcazarejo, wrapping and raising by stone one of the Arab towers, giving rise to the Tower of Homage or Fat Beacon. It was declared a National Monument in 1931.

Unknown places to discover - We visited the castle of Baños de la Encina and the Hermitage of Jesus the Plain (although the plain is a heavy joke) with its baroque dressing room. We loved it, we discovered very interesting and unknown things about our geography. The local guides are fantastic and explain the history of their village with pride and good work. Recomendable 100%

Recommended visit if you are in the area or passing through - Well preserved fortress castle. You can walk around well, the only difficulty, for obvious reasons, is the Keep. I recommend the visit with a guide, it lasts between 30-45 meters, it is enjoyable and with useful information. You have to reserve. The parking lot upstairs is small.

A GREAT SURPRISE - BURGALIMAR Castle is in excellent condition, they say it is the best Muslim castle in Europe, the truth is that the castle and the town itself (great unknown to me) were a very pleasant surprise. The guide's explanations were very accurate and enjoyable. We also visited the surroundings on the tourist train arriving at the RUMBLAR RESERVOIR, a hidden gem. The landscape is very nice and the walk is very pleasant. The sunset improved the views even more. I recommend it

Another treasure of Andalusia - We really enjoyed the visit to this castle and Chema made it very enjoyable for us, with his salt shaker he kept us attentive throughout the visit. I think the duration of the guided route is correct, and there are panels that you can read for more information. The castles are super beautiful, it is nice to see that our land has these treasures.

Improper treatment of tour operator - We have just seen the castle of Baños de la Encina and it has been spectacular, worth a stop to see. Guide José Manuel explained the highlights and then made a free visit. The company that carries out the sightseeing tours is the one that unfortunately overshadowed our final impression since the person who has attended us at the tourist office with whom I could not contact by phone only by WhatsApp sent me a message with a link to make the reservation of the guided tour of the castle charging a price with management costs and without explaining in the message the possibility of being able to buy the cheapest ticket at the door of the castle and without expenses. When I went at the direction of the person selling the tickets to explain what happened the deal has been unpleasant from my point of view without giving me clear explanations of what happened just told me that he clearly stated on the website that he personally carries that there is discount in the online booking, the link he has sent me does not put it anywhere if on the website, and that he would not discuss it because he carried it. I told him I didn’t want to discuss it I just wanted him to give me back the difference between what I had paid and what other people paid at the castle ticket office and the management costs they charged me because they didn’t give me a choice in the message he sent to buy it there. He agreed to refund the difference without the management costs and when he told me that it did not seem fair because of the lack of information that I explained before he told me that he made a full refund of the visit without the management costs. I replied that I did not want to make a free visit only that it seems to me that since I could not speak on the phone in the message sent I should explain the other options of purchase of the reservation. And it is a shame his final comment "if I have returned the full amount I do not know what you are complaining about"...
