• Banteay Chhmar - Often translated as ‘The Small Citadel’ or ‘Narrow Fortress’, Banteay Chhmar ranks as the fourth-largest temple from the Angkorian period, following Preah Khan, Angkor Thom, and Angkor Wat. It is regarded as the most significant temple of its era in the country. The complex features a moat and reservoir, nestled in a remote, lush, and pristine environment. Although much about the temple remains unknown, it is established that King Jayavarman VII commissioned it in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, and a shrine within the complex housed the image of his Crown Prince.
• Soieries du Mekong - Following a local lunch at a community restaurant, a visit is made to a French NGO project called “Les Soieries du Mekong.” This non-profit initiative is dedicated to encouraging and training young Cambodians in the region surrounding the temple to preserve traditional silk weaving skills. It is a commendable project that provides these young artisans with a source of income and a promising future.

These lesser-known ruins have been vital to the growth of the Khmer Empire. One such site is Banteay Chhmar, located in the far north-western corner of the former Angkor kingdom. Situated approximately 60 kilometers from Serey Sophoan, it was built during the reign of Jayavarman VII in the 12th/13th century. The central temple once housed an image of Srindrakumaraputra (the Crown Prince), likely a son of Jayavarman VII.
