- Kootenay National Park - A realm of ice and fire, Kootenay National Park is a land of contrasts, featuring valleys and canyons sculpted by glaciers and grasslands shaped by fire. Enjoy a scenic drive along its historic highway.
- Marble Canyon - Just beyond the continental divide, where the Rockies transition from Alberta into British Columbia, lies one of the best-kept local secrets: Marble Canyon.
Here, visitors can embark on an easy 1.3-kilometer out-and-back trail that crosses several bridges, offering stunning views across the canyon and down into the striking turquoise waters of Tokumm Creek below.
For those who appreciate learning moments during hikes, take a moment to admire how this small creek carved through the creamy-colored sedimentary rock over millennia to form the canyon. Otherwise, simply enjoy the breathtaking beauty.
- Spiral Tunnels - Experience a historical feat of engineering brilliance firsthand at the first stop of this action-packed and award-winning Radventures small group adventure.
The Spiral Tunnels consist of two massive figure-eight tracks that traverse the mountains and mark the site where a train tragically plunged into the lake, resulting in the loss of three workers.
You might catch a glimpse of a freight train passing through; if not, the stunning mountain scenery makes this brief stop worthwhile!
- Emerald Lake - It’s quite apparent where Emerald Lake gets its name.
If the lake’s color doesn’t captivate you, the surrounding landscape certainly will!
The President Range mountains encircle the lake, creating a natural amphitheater of grand proportions with towering peaks and forested banks.
As a guest on this small group tour, enjoy guaranteed and expedited access right to the lake’s shoreline.
Here, you will have 1.5 hours to explore the lakeside trails, rent a canoe, or simply relax under a tree and watch the world go by!
- Natural Bridge - Natural Bridge is a remarkable natural rock formation that spans the flow of the Kicking Horse River west of Field, where the slower-moving waters from the Field valley flats begin their descent through a canyon to join the Amiskwi River.
The Natural Bridge lookout offers visitors the chance to view the formation from various vantage points, with interpretive displays explaining the physical processes at work. The bridge is easily accessible by car, just 3km (1.9 miles) from Field on Emerald Lake Road.
Sculpted by the erosive forces of rushing water over what was once a waterfall, the Natural Bridge serves as a powerful reminder of water’s influence in shaping the landscape. Softer rock beneath the Natural Bridge’s hard limestone band eroded more quickly, and fissures in the rock widened until the water flow was diverted below the outcrop.
- Takakkaw Falls - Standing at 1,224 ft, Takakkaw Falls is the tallest waterfall in the Canadian Rockies and the second tallest in Canada.
As snow and ice melt in early summer, they fuel the cascading water, creating picturesque mist through the pines. If fortunate, visitors may spot a rainbow or two at its base.
It’s no surprise that the waterfall’s name is derived from the Cree word for “wonderful,” complementing the national park’s name, Yoho, which is the Cree expression of awe and amazement, akin to “wow.”
- Yoho National Park - Yoho National Park may be one of the smaller parks in the Canadian Rockies, but it certainly delivers a powerful experience!
Located a bit further up the road from the bustling Lake Louise and Banff National Park, Yoho National Park offers an intimate atmosphere, despite being filled with immense, snow-capped mountains and thundering waterfalls!
This stunning region is a paradise for explorers seeking to escape the ordinary, and it should be on everyone’s Rockies bucket list.
