Balabac Islands - Enjoyable to escape the crowds and therefore a good trip. Not easy to do Balabac Islands independently so a group tour is necessary. Day 1 & 2 were excellent with wonderful beaches and snorkeling. Day 3 was a strange one - a very long boat to a not especially nice beach. Camp on Siscipan island was basic but I loved the island. I thought the food was good but I 'm not at all fussy. Overall worthwhile.

Not what it says in the brochure! - This was for the Balabac trip, ironically not listed on the dropdown menu for trip advisor…. I wonder why…
I’ll start this post by stating we went to Balabac in December. This is in the off season, the best time to go is between March to May. You may still get great weather in December and it’s also a lot quieter, but I wouldn’t bother outside the best times to go. Whilst we had both good and bad weather, it does not contribute much to this review apart from how Lagum handled it.
Let’s start with the pickup. We were picked up by our driver at 3:15am which was on schedule. Whilst I personally didn’t mind it, he played very loud rock music throughout the 5 hour journey to the port, and this was not a great experience for those on the bus who wanted to get a little sleep after a very early pickup. The driver then ended up with a tyre puncture. You could put this down to the large amount of weight in the van full of people and luggage, poor maintenance or just bad luck, however we spotted the same driver on the way back from the tour who had broken down on the side of the road again, which indicates it’s one of the first two options. Likely a regular occurrence with pickup drivers. Once we arrived in port we were dropped off and told to wait until someone from Lagum turned up to greet us. We were given very little direction, told to sign in at the port with the coast guard, and then asked to wait for a boat. When the boat arrived it didn’t have enough space for everyone on our tour. Unfortunately we missed out and were told to wait an estimated 40 minutes for the next one with several other people from our tour. We were then left in the port with no support as the other guide disappeared. 1hr and 15 minutes later, the guide came back and told us we could now get on the boat, but we had missed the first 2 hours of the tour and time on one of the islands. It then became apparent the tour guide had lost a member of our group who due to poor communication had joined another boat and ended up in a different location.
Poor communication became a theme of the tour all the way through. After finally making it to the island we were told we had 30 minutes to explore and then lunch. No information on the island, why it was on the itinerary, what there was to explore or any other information. Lunch was then served which just cold rice, cold crab and cold chicken. We were then taken to a second island with the same treatment. No information. Just told a time to be back and left to our own devices.
We then proceeded to camp, and upon arrival we were met with more chaos. The lady in charge had a piece of paper with all our names and accommodation allocation, but then proceeded to change everything on the fly. People were being upgraded to huts, people were being downgraded to tents, people were complaining they hadn’t got what was booked or promised and everything was a joke. It took 45 minutes to go through this process as everything was changing constantly. No organisation whatsoever. Originally we were marked down as a hut, this was changed to a tent and told the tent was for 2 people. When we arrived, there was only one blanket, pillow and towel. We asked if we could be given extra and then told we had to change tents again with someone else. At this point we were so tired we refused and just asked to be given the extra items we needed to which we were finally given them 30 minutes later.
The accommodation is then exactly as it sounds. A tent on a wooden platform next to the beach. You are given a thin mattress, a blanket, a pillow, a towel and a roll of tissue paper. The toilets are just a toilet bowl and a bucket with water to flush. They do not flush properly. The showers are just a wet room with a bucket to pour cold water over yourself. We knew that the conditions would be like this, so this is not a complaint in itself, however they could be a lot more upfront about this and explain in detail that you will have very little.
The food is then just cold meal after cold meal. Breakfast you will be given one cold fried egg, one cold piece of ham and 2 plain pieces of bread. Lunch is most likely cold rice, cold chicken/pork, cold fish and then some fruit, dinner pretty much the same. Everything is stone cold and tastes a day or two old. You are served water with meals but not at any other time which in a destination where you are in 30+ degree heat and spending hours on a boat island hopping, this is a disgrace and bottled water should be given as standard. Unfortunate this is not the case.
Everything else is an optional extra. If you want any drinks, snacks or anything else you need to buy it from their shop. Snorkels, you have to rent them each day (which is a joke considering the trip is centred around island hopping and snorkelling this should be included as standard)
The second day we were then taken to a sandbar that was high tide, so no actual sandbar and then to Onuk island which is beautiful. Unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to see turtles with the rest of the group as the guide sent us in the completely wrong direction and we spent an hour away from the area they were located because the guide gave us the wrong information. This was really the only reason we booked to go to Balabac and was ruined as every other member of our tour saw them, yet when we returned to the group the guide never mentioned this to us and we found out later that evening that we had been told the wrong information.
We then went to a snorkelling area with barely any fish or coral and then to another island camp which was pointless before back to our camp at 3pm. The days are quite short and the itinerary not that well thought out. I think they just take us to several islands with camps to purchase things from the shops during low season due to lack of tourists and ability to make money. The evenings are then left with zero entertainment or opportunity to do anything. Meal times are not communicated so you just have to hang around and hope that you’re are in the vicinity when meals are served otherwise you will miss out and nobody will tell you.
Our third day was then another sandbar we couldn’t fully see because of the tide, then an island which was infested with sand flies. We were told this on the boat that we needed insect repellant, yet it was too late for most people on the boat who didn’t bring it, again just pure lack of communication. They also chose this as the place to serve lunch which in an area infested with flies was just pure stupidity and a horrible experience.
We then proceeded to another snorkelling area to which we were then struck by terrible weather. Torrential rain and 3m waves with no visibility. The guides looked completely lost and visibly worried, talking to each other to frantically work out where they were. People on the boat started to panic, as we were in the middle of the ocean, with a crew who were lost, and waves hitting the boat and rocking it from side to side. The guides did not offer any comfort or advice or any information. Eventually they figured out which direction, but we were at sea in those conditions for a solid 90 minutes. This was outright dangerous and negligible to have us out on the sea with those conditions forecast. They may state they cannot predict the weather, then if that’s the case and they don’t have the proper equipment, they shouldn’t take passengers out to sea, if they did know and chose to do it anyway, then just pure negligence and risk to life.
Thankfully we made it back safe, the guide even asked if we did want to go to a snorkel area, when everyone on the boat was desperate to get back to camp and fully drenched and freezing cold. The conditions could not have permitted snorkelling at all, so the fact they still asked if we wanted to go shows a lack of expertise and leadership to call it quits when the call is needed rather than asking guests opinions when it’s not safe.
Please be aware that what you see on instagram is not what you get on this tour. The itinerary is poor, the islands they take you to are often run down camps from other expeditions and you will be given no information as to where you are being taken or why, just the name of the island and nothing else.
The guides barely speak any English, our guide was swapped 3 times, so we had no consistency or reference point. The organisation and communication was abysmal and this was honestly one of the worst experiences we’ve ever had travelling. We would not recommend travelling with Lagum. Everything is done as cheaply as possible with no care for guest experience. There has been plenty of negative feedback which they’ve clearly ignored, and unfortunately we are now adding to those same comments.
Do not book with Lagum adventures. You will regret it. Everyone on our tour was happy to leave and had a terrible experience on this trip.
Avoid!

Abysmal - avoid lagum at all costs - I genuinely just can’t even comprehend how bad this tour company (and sister company camp malaya have been). We booked a 3 night 4 day tour. So excited to explore balabac however the trip was a total disaster from start to finish.
Firstly: the first day we got to port it was chaos. There was no explanation of who our tour guide was or what’s happening. This resulted in one guy getting lost and climbing onto the wrong boat. We also had a flat tyre on the ride down from puerto princesa.
Second: when we got to the first island we had lunch (crab that you had to break with your bare hands) and then another stop. We were in base camp by 3! Why not let us explore more?
Third: when you got to camp a lady came with paper and names so we thought great she’s just gonna allocate everyone. nope. She started swapping and changing peoples accomodation. Picking and choosing her friends over other people. We were down to be in a hut, but somehow she thought it was ok to change us to a tent. A tent miles away from toilets, showers etc. over 40 minutes to give people somewhere to sleep. When we got to said tent there was only one pillow and blanket for two people. Such a joke.
Fourth: I knew not to expect any nice toilets or showers but to be clear in the day if you try to shower with your cold bucket of water you can’t see inside the cubicle and the toilets were filthy. Only 3 toilets for an entire camp!
Fifth: I’m not a fussy eater in the slightest I will eat anything but I tell you the food was barely edible. Sub par at best. Every meal was stone cold. No preferences for vegetarians etc. zero vegetables. Breakfast was a joke. Two stale pieces of bread with one tiny spoon of rotten scrambled eggs and a hot dog sausage. The food was so bad that people were starving.
Sixth: everything was an optional extra. Oh you want a drink with meals - extra. You need a snorkel extra. At one point the Scrooge lady of the camp tried charging me for water.
Seven: the communication was near none existent. We were told to get in a boat with our guide. Only to see the guide disappeared as we arrived because he didn’t speak English. How can he be our guide if he doesn’t speak English? The guide there on after changed daily.
Eighth: the worst part for me was the fact that the itenerary was just lazy and not well thought out. They’d take you to a sand bar but you can’t see the sand bar because they took us at the wrong time when it’s high tide. They then took us to the ugliest derelict garbage ridden islands. Why take us there if there’s nothing to see. We were promised white sandy beaches that look Instagram worthy. The ones we were taken to made Blackpool look like heaven. Then other stops included visiting deserted camps of other companies. Why take us here? There’s nothing to do or see. We soon realised it was so we could spend money on drinks and snacks at their mates campsite. We were supposed to see beautiful islands instead we saw filthy run down ones that nobody is interested in. The only good stop was onok but no explanation of the island or what to do or where to see the turtles which we didn’t get to see in the end. So devastated.
Ninth: the third day was a write off. Another sandbar we couldn’t see, then we went to another filthy ugly campsite island which we were told were full of sand flies 5 minutes before docking. Most people hadn’t packed repellent because we weren’t told before we left our camp. Third and final stop of the day was supposed to be snorkelling. Appreciate they can’t control the weather but we then got stuck in a horrific storm. No visibility. Huge waves. Slashing rainfall. We were all so scared and absolutely drenched. Even the poor workers (who I believe lagum do not pay fairly) were looking worried, lost and fed up. After an hour and half of clinging on for dear life we then got back to camp. Absolute waste.
At no point either did anyone initiate the groups introducing themselves to one another which was such a shame as nobody really mingled to at least pass some time. You spend so much time bored silly at the camp with nothing to do in the evenings. No music, no camp fire, nothing.
Tenth: all the islands we were taken to but in particular the awful campsites were infested with rabies ridden cats and dogs. When you are trying to eat lunch they are at you. At the camp the roosters are making noises none stop from around 3.30am so expect no sleep. We also had dogs barking and digging around. Oh and we had no fan either yet some others did.
Overall we were sold a lie. We were supposed to see beautiful islands (I don’t care about the poor camp or food if I can at least enjoy the islands) but we didn’t. We saw the rubbish ones that nobody wants to see. So funny how their instagram shares all the islands they didn’t take us to.
If it were possible to give zero stars I would. I wish someone would have told me not to go with this company or camp malaya. I’ve wasted money and time. Never ever pick this tour company. They don’t care about you, or the type of service you get. All they care about is money. So upset and frustrated. It’s completely ruined my Philippines trip
