- Elephant Cave - The origins of this cave are unclear, but it is thought to have been a spiritual meditation site. Legend says it was created by the giant Kebo Iwa’s fingernail. Based on its style, it likely dates back to the 11th-century Bali Kingdom. The complex features both Hindu and Buddhist symbols, including lingam and yoni, symbols of Shiva, and a Ganesha image, while the river area has carved stupas and chattra, representing Buddhism. The temple’s stone carvings of menacing faces are believed to ward off evil spirits. The main figure was once thought to be an elephant, hence the name Elephant Cave. Other sources suggest it is named after the Hindu God Ganesh’s stone statue (with an elephant head) inside the temple. This site is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
