Their proximity to Cairo highlights the distinct historical timelines of the pyramids and the city.
The pyramids at Giza and other nearby desert locations are remnants of an ancient civilization that predated Cairo by centuries. This civilization, known as Memphis, was the capital of the Old Kingdom (2686—2181 BC) of Ancient Egypt, where the pharaohs who built the pyramids once ruled.

Step Pyramid of Djoser - Saqqara is one of several significant necropolis sites near Cairo, offering remarkable sights and immense archaeological importance. Saqqara may even hold more interest for archaeologists than Giza. This vast site contains burials from before the Old Kingdom through the Greek Period of Egyptian history.
The most renowned structure at Saqqara is Djoser’s Step Pyramid. Dating back to the 3rd dynasty (2667—2448 BC), it was the first all-stone complex ever constructed on Earth. It introduced a crucial architectural innovation for the Giza Pyramids and other later pyramids of the 4th dynasty and beyond.
Djoser’s pyramid was the first to utilize multiple mastabas (rectangular tomb structures) stacked to form a step pyramid. This design paved the way for the smooth-sided Giza Pyramids and the smaller 5th and 6th dynasty pyramids found at Saqqara and nearby sites like Dahshur and Abu Sir.
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - The tour guide will lead visitors to the Great Pyramid of Cheops, the only remaining wonder of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World. Visitors can walk around, take photos, touch, and even sit on it.
- Khafre’s Pyramid - The second-largest pyramid at Giza and in Egypt was constructed for Khafre, the third pharaoh of the 4th Dynasty during the Old Kingdom Period of Ancient Egypt around 2540 BC. Known in history by the Greek name Chephren, Khafre was the son of Khufu, the builder of the Great Pyramid, and the grandson of Sneferu, another prominent builder of Ancient Egypt. An external visit is included, but entry into the pyramid requires an additional ticket, which can be purchased during the visit.
- Great Sphinx - Continue the journey to the Great Sphinx, which features a pharaoh’s head on a lion’s body. Dating back to the time of Khephren, the Sphinx was created to guard the pyramid of King Chefren. Next, visit the Valley Temple, associated with the Pyramid of Chefren, which served as a site for the mummification process before the king’s burial.
