Avignon Walking Tour including Pope's Palace - A good tour and a great start to our stay in Avignon, with excellent guide Jeremy The walk through Avignon is at a slow pace with plenty of stops allowing Jeremy to share the history and culture of Avignon, although there are a fair number of stairs to climb in the pope's palace The tour ended with a stop at a local wine bar to sample local wines - added treat on an historical walking tour All in our a very good tour and excellent value for money, we thoroughly enjoyed it

A visit marred by modern art... - A very pleasant visit to a place so full of history. A few corners of shade allow DE breathe despite the strong heat. The setting is sublime and the idea DE the guided tour with DE electronic devices is a good idea since it allows you to delve into the past; to the time when the places were occupied by the pontiffs and was not yet a museum. But, because yes there is a but, the exhibition "Othoniel, COSMOS or Ghosts DE l'Amour" distorts the place. Some will find an art form and an almost beautiful aesthetic aspect, this has not been my case. These large sculptures whose meaning and interest we struggle to find spoil and taint the beauty of the place. These sorts DE "decorations DE Noël", DE "colliers DE pearles" contrast sharply with the sublime architecture of large halls or smaller and discreet vestibules. This was the only downside DE the guided tour. It's a shame...

So so - Our guide was not very engaging and at time seemed to struggle. The palace had a better method of seeing this site for less money. She took us to the touristy shopping area. Ugh! There must have been something better to share in this lively town.

An empty oven with imposing walls - I don't know if the Palace of the Popes wants to remember the greatness of the past or test the physical endurance of visitors... but inside it literally felt like being in an oven: at least 45 degrees, still air and no point to cool off. The rooms, which one imagines to be lavish, are actually bare and anonymous. They give you a tablet to show you how it “must have been”, but after two rooms you realize that you are paying a ticket to walk inside huge hot stone walls. A curious anecdote: it is said that already in the Middle Ages the palace was so austere as to look more like a fortress than a residence. Today the feeling is the same: external greatness, but inside a void that leaves little to remember, except the suffocating heat. If you really want to appreciate Avignon, admire the palace from the outside or from the square: it is there that reveals all its beauty. I can’t tell if the Palace of the Popes is meant to showcase history or simply test visitors’ endurance... but inside it felt like stepping into an oven: easily over 40 degrees, no breeze, no shade, and nowhere to cool down. The rooms, which you expect to be majestic, are in fact bare and lifeless. They hand you a tablet to show “what it used to look like,” but after a couple of rooms you realize you’ve paid to wander through massive, overheated stone walls. A curious fact: even in the Middle Ages the palace was criticized for looking more like a fortress than a residence. Centuries later, that impression hasn’t changed — imposing from the outside, but inside it’s emptiness and oppressive heat. If you want to enjoy Avignon, admire the palace from the square: that’s where its beauty really belongs.
