The Auburn Avenue African American All-Inclusive Tour offers an insightful exploration of Black life and culture in Atlanta, spanning from Juneteenth/Emancipation Day in 1865 to the modern Civil Rights Movement in 1965. The tour places significant focus on the Rosenwald educational system for Black students in Atlanta and highlights Booker T. Washington, celebrated as the Great Black Educator. Participants will discover the connections between Alonzo Herndon, George Washington Carver, and the Julius Rosenwald Foundation.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore Atlanta’s Historic Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Georgia’s first Black public high school, and America’s first Black city park. Booker T. Washington High School holds the distinction of being Georgia’s first Black public high school and the inaugural Black school in the Atlanta Public School System. The tour also showcases how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s grandfather mobilized the community to establish a public high school for Black students in Atlanta, from which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. himself graduated.
